If you miss Black & White, first decide whether you want to train a creature, guide a civilization, or reshape the land around your followers. No game in the available comparisons is established as recreating the original’s full combination of creature learning, civilization influence, and moral choice. For a civilization advancing through eras with divine powers, start with The Universim; for giants shaping nature, try Reus; for hands-on terrain changes to protect a tribe, choose From Dust.
Which part of Black & White do you want back?
“Games similar to Black & White” can mean very different things: teaching a creature, guiding a population, making a civilization prosper, or changing the environment to help followers survive. The recommendations below are grouped by that distinction rather than treated as interchangeable god games.

| Game | Best fit | What you do | Key difference from Black & White |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Universim | Civilization progression and divine intervention | Guide Nuggets through technological ages, use god powers, and manage an ecosystem. | The cited Steam description does not establish Black & White-style trained creature behavior. |
| Reus | Shaping nature through giant avatars | Use giants to alter the world and balance natural resources against human activity. | You influence humanity’s world, not its will. |
| From Dust | Hands-on terrain manipulation | Change terrain and natural forces to guide or protect a tribe. | Its emphasis is environmental problem-solving, not the combined creature-training and civilization loop. |
| Spore | Evolution and life simulation | Guide life from a microorganism through later stages. | Its broad evolutionary arc is different from village management and creature training. |
| Populous | Classic god-game foundations | Use divine power to guide followers and defeat enemies. | It is a historical comparison; contemporary platform access is not established by the cited source. |
| WorldBox | Open-ended creation and destruction | Let races develop and fight, then introduce challenges in a sandbox. | It favors experimentation over a close creature-and-village loop. |
| Godus | Land-shaping god-game play | Begin with villagers and modify land as you build a world. | It is an adjacent option, not an established match for the full Black & White formula. |
| Dwarf Fortress | Deep simulation and emergent stories | Watch autonomous inhabitants generate unpredictable outcomes. | Its appeal is simulation complexity rather than direct god-game control. |
Best match for a civilization you can guide: The Universim
The Universim is the clearest pick if what you remember most is watching a society develop while intervening from above. Its Steam store description calls it a strategy city builder with god-game elements: players guide Nuggets from the Stone Age toward spacefaring, use more than 15 god powers, research more than 200 advances, manage ecosystems, and encounter procedurally generated planets.
That makes it the strongest cited fit for civilization progression and divine intervention. Those systems do not establish a creature that learns from the player in the way Black & White’s creature did, so choose it for the society-building side rather than expecting a full substitute.

Best for shaping nature through giants: Reus
In Reus, you control giants that shape the natural world. Abbey Games describes the central tension plainly: “You can shape their world, but not their will.” That limit matters if you want direct control over people; it is a strength if you enjoy influencing human communities indirectly through the environment and managing the consequences of abundance and human greed.
Abbey Games’ Reus page lists the game’s original release as May 16, 2013. Its giants are tools for changing nature, not substitutes for a trainable animal companion.
Best for manipulating the landscape to save a tribe: From Dust
From Dust centers on environmental problem-solving. Genre overviews describe moving or altering terrain, soil, lava, and water to guide or protect a tribe. If the memorable part of Black & White for you was moving the world itself to help followers, this is the most focused recommendation.
It is a narrower match: the cited descriptions emphasize terrain and survival rather than a player-trained creature or a broad civilization-management system. Check the current store listing for the platform you intend to use before buying, since availability can change.

- Wage massive wars, sieges and battles or use your skill and power to keep the peace
- Discover and use new Epic Miracles, including the ground-ripping Earthquake and volcanoes, which cause rivers of lava
- Choose and customize the Creature that's right for you from a selection, including old favorites such as the Ape, Cow, and Lion
- Research and create new forms of weaponry, from swords to bows to siege machines
- Create and control settlements that include housing, farming, and many other buildings like fountains and lush gardens (if you're Good) or spikes and torture pits (if you're Evil)

Spore: guide life through a long evolutionary arc
Spore is the choice if you want to shape life at a much broader scale. A genre roundup describes guiding evolution from a microorganism through later stages. That premise gives it a god-game connection, but it is not centered on managing a village alongside a trained creature.
Populous: revisit the genre’s classic roots
Populous is a foundational god-sim series built around using divine power to guide followers and defeat enemies. It is useful as a historical point of comparison, but the cited overview does not establish where or how to buy it today; verify current platform access before planning a playthrough.
Rank #4
WorldBox: experiment with a world sandbox
WorldBox is better suited to open-ended creation and destruction than to reproducing Black & White’s specific loop. Its sandbox framing lets races develop and fight while the player introduces challenges, making it a fit for watching systems unfold rather than training a companion.
Godus: build by changing the land
Godus begins with villagers and lets you modify land as you build a world. That makes it an adjacent option for players drawn to landscape-shaping god games. The cited description does not establish its current platform availability or support status, so check a current storefront before choosing it.
Best Value
Dwarf Fortress: choose simulation depth over direct control
Dwarf Fortress is a better recommendation for unpredictable inhabitants and deep simulation than for a close Black & White match. Its autonomous units can produce emergent stories, but its cited appeal is the complexity of the simulation rather than a conventional god-game creature-and-village structure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much control do you want?
These games differ not just in setting, but in the player’s relationship to the people and systems on screen. Reus explicitly leaves human will beyond the player’s control; The Universim combines god powers with management of autonomous Nuggets; From Dust makes environmental intervention the central activity; WorldBox is framed as a sandbox for experimentation.
- Choose The Universim for progression across ages with divine powers.
- Choose Reus for indirect influence through nature and consequences.
- Choose From Dust for urgent terrain manipulation in service of a tribe.
- Choose WorldBox if you primarily want an open-ended world to observe and disrupt.
Check availability before you buy
Prices, sales, platform compatibility, and system requirements can change. The Universim has a live Steam listing with store and requirements information, but check the current page against your operating system and hardware; the listing’s macOS compatibility details may require particular attention. The Steam page is the primary source for its current listing information. For older or less clearly available games such as Populous, verify that a legitimate version is available for your platform before relying on an old recommendation. A guide to Populous and modern alternatives also warns that platform and price details can change.
For genre context, PCGamesN’s 2026 god-games guide discusses From Dust, Reus, Black & White, and The Universim. Plarium’s roundup, titled for 2024 but marked updated June 17, 2025, covers several of the adjacent picks, including Spore, Populous, WorldBox, Godus, and Dwarf Fortress.
