Its supernatural premise and several advertised combat approaches give it a clear hook, but the critical picture is mixed: Spanish outlet MeriStation rated it 6/10, citing technical faults and poorly balanced boss fights. The game launched in 2024 for PlayStation, Xbox and PC; you do not need to consume the wider Unknown 9 stories before playing.
What is Unknown 9: Awakening about?
You play as Haroona, a Quaestor able to enter the Fold, a mysterious dimension that overlaps the ordinary world. The story sets her against the Ascendants, a faction seeking to use the Fold to alter human history. The PlayStation listing describes locations including the sands of Mauritania, Indian jungles and 19th-century Portugal.

Bandai Namco presents the game as a narrative-driven, third-person action-adventure. Its central appeal is the combination of a supernatural setting with a protagonist whose access to another dimension informs both the story and combat.
How does combat work?
Bandai Namco advertises several ways for Haroona to confront enemies: ambush them from the shadows, fight in melee, or enter an enemy’s body and turn that foe against others. Her other listed abilities include dodging bullets, shielding herself and hurling energy. These are the publisher’s descriptions of the available mechanics, not a claim of hands-on testing.

The choice between stealth, direct fighting and using an enemy against their allies gives the combat pitch variety. MeriStation’s review, however, specifically lists poorly balanced boss fights among the game’s weaknesses, a caveat for players most interested in combat challenges.
Is Unknown 9: Awakening worth playing?
The clearest supported critical signal is MeriStation’s Spanish-language review, published November 2, 2024, which scored the game 6/10. The outlet described an accessible adventure with a straightforward story and a universe that is easy to understand, while criticizing technical faults, weak technical quality and unbalanced boss fights. That is one publication’s assessment, not a review-aggregate score or evidence of a broader consensus.

Based on that evaluation and the publisher’s stated premise, the game is easiest to recommend to players drawn to supernatural adventure stories and the Fold concept, provided they are comfortable with the possibility of technical rough edges and uneven boss encounters. Players seeking polished action or consistently balanced boss battles have reason to be cautious. No sales, player-count or review-aggregate statistic is established here.
Do you need to know the Unknown 9 universe first?
No. The broader Unknown 9 narrative universe includes novels, comics and a scripted podcast, but Reflector Entertainment says each story is designed to work as an entry point. Its November 2024 press kit puts it this way: “Each of our stories serves as an entry point to our first universe, and each product represents a standalone narrative, the collective of which can reveal a larger, overarching saga.” You can start with the game without completing the other media first.

Platforms, editions and accessibility
Unknown 9: Awakening launched on October 18, 2024, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC via Steam. Bandai Namco’s launch announcement named Standard, Digital Deluxe and Collector’s editions. The PlayStation US store page lists Standard and Deluxe editions for PS4 and PS5, along with cosmetic add-ons; current prices and contents should be checked on the relevant live store page.
The PlayStation listing also describes platform-specific options such as advanced controller remapping, adjustable stick sensitivity, large subtitles, audio cue alternatives, manual saving and pausing while offline. Check the listing for your particular platform before relying on any one feature as universal.
Bandai Namco’s store lists a Standard Edition product for Xbox Series X. Store listings do not establish current stock, price or availability in every region. A PlayStation digital listing is not evidence of a physical disc edition; confirm format and regional availability with the retailer before buying.
