Remote Play requires a PlayStation console and a suitable network connection. Emulation depends on the exact game’s compatibility with a changing emulator build and the host computer.
What is the difference between Remote Play and PS5 emulation?
| Question | PS Remote Play | PS5 emulation |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | On a PS4 or PS5 console; video and input are streamed over a network to a supported device. | In emulator software on a host computer, if the emulator can run that game. |
| Do you need a PlayStation console? | Yes. PlayStation requires a PS4 or PS5 console; PlayStation Portal specifically requires a PS5. | The goal is to run software without the PS5 console, but compatibility depends on the emulator and game. |
| What determines whether it works? | Supported devices and games, console setup, and network conditions. | The emulator build, the specific game, and the host computer. Compatibility can change between builds. |
| Is a network connection required? | Yes. PlayStation says broadband of at least 5 Mbps is required and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. | A universal network requirement is not established by the available project information. |
They are not two ways to do the same thing. Remote Play sends your console’s output to another screen; it does not install or run a PS5 game on that screen. An emulator attempts to execute console software on a different computer, and the fact that a game boots does not prove it is playable.
When should you choose Remote Play?
Remote Play is the practical option if you own a PS4 or PS5 and want to play its games on a compatible phone, tablet, PC, Mac, supported Android TV device, another PlayStation console, or PlayStation Portal. PlayStation provides the PS Remote Play app and device information. You need the app, a compatible game, and a network connection; the service does not let you play without a console.
Check the connection and setup
- PlayStation lists broadband of at least 5 Mbps as required and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those figures are guidance, not a guarantee of image quality or smooth play: the connection’s actual performance can vary with the network environment.
- Remote Play uses network data. If you connect over mobile data, that usage counts toward your plan’s allowance.
- Enable Remote Play on the console. If you want to connect while the console is in Rest Mode, configure the console’s network-related Rest Mode settings as described in PlayStation’s Portal compatibility and setup information.
Check the game and controls
PlayStation lists DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 among the controller options, while mobile devices can also use touch controls. Controller availability varies by destination device. Games that require a VR headset or additional peripherals beyond the listed controllers are excluded, as are games that must be streamed through a PS Plus Premium membership. Check the game’s support and your device’s compatibility before relying on Remote Play.

What PlayStation Portal does—and does not do
Portal is a dedicated Remote Play device for a PS5, not a substitute for one. It does not work with PS4. PlayStation’s Portal compatibility guidance explains the console requirements and setup.
What can PS5 emulation do today?
The KytyPS5 project’s repository describes it as an actively developed emulator for Windows and Linux, with experimental macOS support. The project says it can boot 2D games and a selection of 3D games, and that its development focuses on compatibility and boot reliability. It also warns that behavior can change significantly between builds. These are the project’s descriptions of its own status, not independent testing.

A September 2026 GamesRadar+ report on a developer update said that 12 of 55 tested games reached in-game, while six were described as fully playable at 60 FPS. That is a dated snapshot of one reported test set—not a representative success rate, a promise about a particular title, or evidence that every game reaching gameplay can be completed reliably. See the GamesRadar+ report for its account of the update.
Read compatibility claims carefully
- Boots: the emulator starts some part of the game or its software. This alone does not establish that you can play.
- Reaches in-game: gameplay is reached, but that does not establish stable performance or completion from beginning to end.
- Fully playable: a stronger compatibility claim, but it still applies to the reported game, emulator build, and test conditions—not automatically to another computer or a later build.
For a specific game, check the emulator’s current compatibility information and build notes, then confirm that the report describes the same title and a meaningful level of playability. Do not infer performance on your computer from a game count or frame-rate claim about another test.

Which option fits your situation?
- You own a PS4 or PS5 and want to use another screen: check Remote Play’s supported devices, the game’s restrictions, and whether your network meets PlayStation’s guidance.
- You want to use PlayStation Portal: you need a PS5; Portal is not compatible with PS4.
- You want to play without a PS5: Remote Play cannot do that. PS5 emulation is the approach aimed at running console software on a computer, but verify the exact game’s current compatibility rather than assuming it will work.
- You are deciding whether to invest time in an emulator: start with the game’s current compatibility status, the emulator build, and your computer’s suitability. A game that boots or reaches gameplay may still not be fully playable.
