Buy directly from Steam if you want Steam’s purchase and refund route. Consider a third-party store when it has a credible sourcing basis and the exact game, edition, platform, region, and terms match your needs at a better final price. A Steam key sold elsewhere can be legitimate, but buying it outside Steam changes who handles refunds and other purchase problems.
What are you actually comparing?
A Steam Store purchase is made through Steam. A third-party store may sell a Steam key, or it may sell a PC version that activates on another platform. Check the listing’s activation platform rather than assuming every PC game purchase will appear in your Steam library.
Valve says developers can request Steam keys to sell games through other stores and at retail. That means an outside store selling a Steam key is not, by itself, proof that the key is unauthorized. Valve describes Steam keys as a tool for developers to distribute or sell games beyond Steam: Steamworks: Steam Keys.
Compare the same game and the real final price
Discount percentages are only useful when the offers are for equivalent items. Before paying, confirm the game edition, activation platform, eligible country or region, currency, taxes, fees, and seller refund terms. Prices vary by title and over time; a store that is cheapest for one game may not be cheapest for another. IsThereAnyDeal’s DEATHLOOP price information is one example of title-specific pricing, not a lasting price recommendation.

| What to check | Steam Store | Third-party store |
|---|---|---|
| What you receive | The purchase is handled through Steam. | Check whether it is a Steam key or a version for another launcher or store. |
| Edition | Confirm the edition on the Steam listing. | Match the edition and included content to the Steam offer. |
| Region | Steam displays regional pricing and applicable terms. | Check the key’s activation-country restrictions before buying; restrictions can apply to keys and gifts. |
| Final cost | Check the current price for the exact edition and region. | Compare the same edition and platform entitlement, including currency, taxes, and fees. |
| Refund and support | Steam’s standard refund policy generally allows eligible requests within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. | The seller’s terms govern the outside purchase; Steam cannot refund it. |
| Key sourcing | Steam is the seller. | Prefer a store that explains its sourcing basis. Screening tools can help, but do not guarantee every listing. |
Is it safe to buy Steam keys from another store?
It can be, if the store has a credible authorization and sourcing basis and the offer is for the right region and product. IsThereAnyDeal says it covers shops it considers authorized, looks for evidence about key sources, and checks for store red flags. Its covered-shops page lists stores including Humble Store, Green Man Gaming, Fanatical, and Steam. Treat that coverage as a useful screening aid, not a guarantee for every key or a substitute for checking the offer’s terms.
Keys can also be revoked. Valve says a publisher may revoke a key, including when the publisher determines it was obtained fraudulently. If a third-party key is invalid or revoked, Steam cannot refund the outside transaction; Steam directs buyers to contact the retailer for relevant issues. See Valve’s guidance on revoked CD keys.

Who handles refunds and problems?
Buying from Steam
Steam’s standard policy generally lets you request a refund within 14 days of purchase if you have played for less than two hours. The policy has other conditions and exceptions; consult Steam Refunds for the applicable terms. The 14-day and under-two-hour limits describe the standard eligibility window, not an automatic refund in every case.
Buying from another store
Valve says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys and Steam Wallet cards. For a refund or purchase issue, contact the retailer and check its terms before buying. Steam Support also notes that region restrictions can apply to Steam keys and gifts; a key that cannot activate in your country is a seller-side issue, not a Steam purchase eligible for Steam’s refund route.

Does Steam refund the difference if a game goes on sale?
No automatic price adjustment is offered. Steam says that if a game becomes cheaper after you buy it, you may request a refund and repurchase it at the sale price if the original purchase qualifies under the refund policy. See Steam’s sales and purchasing FAQ. If you are deciding whether to buy now or wait, weigh the current price against the convenience of having the game immediately; do not count on Steam crediting the difference later.

A practical decision rule
- Choose Steam when you want the purchase managed by Steam and access to its standard refund route, or when the third-party listing’s platform, region, edition, or seller terms are unclear.
- Consider an outside store when its sourcing basis is credible, the exact offer matches your needs, and its final price is better after applicable costs.
- Pause before checkout if the listing does not clearly state the activation platform, edition, eligible countries, or refund process.
