To reach Sakurajima in Palworld, travel toward the northwest of the existing Palpagos map and explore into its blacked-out area. The first visit is a physical crossing over open water, not a separate map load or a quest unlock. Prepare for stronger enemies before landing: getting there has no reported level requirement, but the island is not a safe early-game zone.
Where Sakurajima is and how to get there
Sakurajima is an island in the northwest of the same world as the rest of Palpagos. It does not appear as a separate destination you select from a menu; you reveal it by exploring into the fog of war. GameSpot’s location guide describes it as part of the existing map, while a later Palworld Database guide says the route involves crossing open water, with no quest, key item, or unlock gate.
- Open your map and identify the northwest edge of the explored area.
- Travel toward the island by crossing the water. Choose a route and transport you can manage; the cited guides do not specify a mandatory vehicle or Pal.
- Explore far enough into the dark map area to reveal Sakurajima.
- When you reach fast-travel statues on the island, touch them to make them available for later fast travel.
If your goal is only to establish access, revealing the map and activating statues is different from clearing the island’s encounters. You can choose how far to push based on your party and supplies.
How dangerous is Sakurajima?
There is no fixed level requirement to cross onto the island, but encounter strength varies by area and enemy type. GameSpot’s June 2024 guide reports some Pals at levels 42–43, with higher-level encounters elsewhere, and level-45 human NPCs. The Palworld Database guide updated August 2026 reports some island-exclusive field spawns in the mid-30s and field Alpha encounters at levels 55–58. These are observations about different encounter categories, not one universal island level or an entry gate.

How many new Pals did Sakurajima add?
Pocketpair’s June 26, 2024 announcement says, “Sakurajima is home to many new Pals! Explore and find new species!” The announcement confirms new Pals but does not give a roster total in the cited passage. A Palworld Database guide updated August 17, 2026 counts 24 additions associated with the update: 14 new species and 10 subspecies forms. So “24 Pals” includes subspecies; it does not mean 24 wholly new species. A separate guide counts eight species exclusive to the island, a different measure from all update additions.
Use the island as the place to explore for its new roster, but keep those counts distinct: update-wide additions include subspecies, while the eight figure refers to island-exclusive species.

What else came with the Sakurajima update?
Pocketpair’s June 26, 2024 update announcement identifies the release as version 0.3.1 and lists more than the island and its Pals:
- The Moonflowers faction and its tower
- A multiplayer-exclusive arena
- A co-op oil-rig stronghold
- Crude Oil
- A player level cap of 55 at that time
The level cap of 55 is a launch-era patch-note figure from June 2024, not a statement of the game’s current cap. The announcement is useful for understanding what that update originally introduced, rather than determining today’s progression limit.
