Choose PlayStation Plus Extra when several games you want are in its current Game Catalog and you expect to play them while subscribed. Buy a game separately when you want reliable access to one particular title over a longer period, it is absent from the catalog or may leave soon, and its price makes sense for you. The right comparison is the cost of Extra over the time you expect to subscribe versus the price of the games you will actually play, with other benefits weighed separately.
What does PlayStation Plus Extra include?
Extra includes the Essential-tier benefits, plus access to the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. Core PlayStation Plus benefits include online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts and cloud storage. The catalog is a subscription library: its titles change, and some have announced dates when they leave.

Sony’s US PlayStation Plus page displayed Extra prices of $16.99 for one month, $43.99 for three months and $134.99 for twelve months when checked on October 4, 2026. The subscription continues until canceled. These are US prices observed on that date, not a promise of current or future pricing elsewhere. How to compare the cost
- Choose the titles you actually intend to play. Check each one in the Game Catalog for your PlayStation Store region, tier and platform. A large catalog is useful only if it includes games you want. Sony explains how to find and access catalog games in its PlayStation Plus game access guide.
- Estimate your subscription period. Compare the plan price for the time you are likely to use Extra with the separate prices of those titles. Do not compare a one-month subscription with an entire year of access unless that matches your plans.
- Account for Extra benefits you will use. If you would otherwise pay for online multiplayer, or you value monthly games, discounts or cloud storage, include that value in your decision. Avoid assigning a dollar value to benefits you would not use.
- Consider how long you want access. Catalog access depends on both an active subscription and continued availability of the game. A separate purchase may suit you better if you expect to revisit a title after a long break or want access that is not tied to the catalog.
There is no universal break-even number of games or months. The outcome depends on the current game prices, your expected subscription duration, which titles are in the catalog, and how much the other benefits matter to you.

What happens when a game leaves the Game Catalog?
When a title leaves the catalog, you can no longer rely on Extra to provide access to it. Access to catalog games also requires an active subscription. Sony’s FAQ answers “Are PlayStation Plus games mine to keep?” with: “Yes, for as long as you remain an active subscriber.” That condition does not mean permanent ownership, and some catalog games have published end dates. Check the current catalog listing and any departure date before planning around a title. Sony’s catalog page lists current information; its US PS Plus Usage Terms describe subscription and availability conditions.
If a catalog game leaves or your membership lapses, add-ons or similar consumables bought for that game may not be usable until you renew or buy the same game from the Store. This matters if you plan to spend separately on expansions or in-game content for a title you are accessing through Extra.

Does buying separately mean you own the game outright?
A separate digital purchase is not an unrestricted, transferable copy. Sony’s US Terms of Service, published in March 2026, say a Store purchase grants a personal license for private, non-commercial use and is not transferable unless local law requires otherwise. Sony states: “This means you can use a product in the ways described in the license, but do not own the product.” Read the US Terms of Service and applicable local terms for details.
A physical boxed game is another separate-purchase option, but confirm that the edition works with your console’s disc drive and check the exact listing. The digital-versus-physical choice is separate from the Extra comparison: either way, compare the specific edition and terms rather than assuming every purchase provides the same access.

Is Extra worth it if you only want one game?
It can be, if the game is currently in your regional catalog, you are comfortable with subscription-based access, and Extra’s other benefits matter to you. Buying separately is often the simpler fit when that one game is the main reason you would subscribe, especially if you want to keep returning to it or it is not in the catalog. Compare the actual subscription cost for your expected play window with the game’s current separate price; include other benefits only to the extent you will use them.

For a US digital game purchase, Sony says you can request cancellation and a refund within 14 days only if you have not started downloading or streaming the game. After that, the purchase is generally not refundable unless the game is faulty. Sony’s US policy separately allows a request to cancel and refund a subscription within 14 days of the initial transaction, with a pro-rata reduction for service already used. These are US policy terms; local law may provide additional rights, and policies can differ by region. Check the US PlayStation Store cancellation policy before buying or subscribing.
