Include the base and every protrusion, then check that you can place and remove the model without catching fragile details.
Measure the finished diorama first
- Measure maximum width, height, and depth. Include the base or stand that will remain in the case, plus overhanging or fragile elements.
- Compare those figures with the case’s usable interior. Confirm whether the maker’s dimensions describe the inside or outside of the case; suppliers may calculate sizes differently.
- Allow practical clearance. The build should fit without scraping details, and there should be enough room to place it inside and remove it later.
- Check the destination. Compare the case’s external footprint with the shelf or display area. If it will be wall-mounted, confirm that the exact product and configuration are intended for that use.
Do not infer that a case fits from its packaging dimensions or its external measurements alone. For example, LEGO lists its Play and Display Case as over 19 cm high, 39 cm wide, and 14 cm deep; those are product-listing dimensions, not a guarantee that a particular diorama will fit. LEGO’s US product listing does not claim universal diorama compatibility.
Choose a case format that fits the build
Ready-made LEGO case
A ready-made case is a straightforward option when the build fits its specific interior and the standard format suits the display location. LEGO’s Play and Display Case is a two-level case with six baseplates. Its official US listing showed a price of $39.99 when crawled in 2026; that is a listing price at that time, not a durable price benchmark. Check the current listing and dimensions before buying. Modular case
A modular case may work better for a larger or wider diorama, or when stacking or a larger enclosure is useful. KGBOX describes a Showcase-Pro size for wider vehicles, architecture models, dioramas, and larger builds. Check the exact size and configuration against both the completed model and its intended location; the category description alone cannot confirm fit. See KGBOX’s modular case options.

Custom case
Consider a made-to-measure case when the diorama has an unusual footprint or height that does not fit a ready-made option. Puffin Plastics offers bespoke acrylic cases for LEGO builds, including dioramas, and describes its custom cases as UV-protected. Flying Box provides its own extra-space guidance and dimension calculation. Follow the chosen supplier’s sizing method rather than applying one maker’s formula to another’s product. Compare the details that affect fit and use
- Interior clearance: Confirm the usable internal width, height, and depth, including any space occupied by the case’s base or fittings.
- Outside footprint: Make sure the assembled case fits the shelf or display area.
- Access: Check how the case opens or comes apart, and whether you can load and remove the build without touching delicate sections.
- Base support: Confirm how the diorama will sit in the case and whether its existing base or stand can stay in place.
- Mounting: If you plan to wall-mount the case, verify that the exact product and configuration support that use.
- Material and protection: Read the specification for the exact product. Acrylic is an available choice for custom LEGO cases, and Puffin Plastics describes its cases as UV-protected; treat that as the maker’s product claim, not a universal guarantee.
- Order terms: For bespoke cases, check production lead time, delivery, and return conditions before placing an order.
The available product information does not establish a general performance ranking of acrylic versus glass for clarity, scratch resistance, weight, or long-term protection. Choose based on the specific case’s documented construction and your display requirements rather than assuming one material is always better.

Before ordering a custom case
- Send the supplier the finished build’s maximum width, height, and depth, including its base and protrusions.
- Ask whether the quoted dimensions are internal or external, and how the supplier calculates any extra space.
- Confirm the usable clearance, access method, base arrangement, and whether the case suits the intended shelf or wall display.
- Review the exact product’s material and any stated UV-protection specification.
- Check lead time, delivery, and return terms, particularly because a bespoke size may be handled differently from a standard item.
For an acrylic LEGO diorama display case, compare the maker’s internal-clearance guidance with your measurements before ordering; a custom size is useful only if its dimensions and access work for the finished build.
