The safest way to keep a LEGO diorama dust-free is to enclose it in a clear case sized for the build. For dust that has already settled, support the model and use a clean, very soft brush with light strokes on stable areas. LEGO does not publish a specific dusting method for assembled dioramas; the brushing advice here applies general conservation guidance for plastics and delicate objects.
How do I keep my LEGO display from getting dusty?
Use a transparent case or cabinet that fully encloses the diorama. LEGO describes its Play and Display Case – Blue as designed to keep models free from dust and damage. The US listing gives dimensions of over 7.5 inches (19 cm) high, 15.5 inches (39 cm) wide, and 5.5 inches (14 cm) deep. It is a small example, not a universal fit; availability and price vary by region and may change.
Measure the model before choosing a case. Check usable interior dimensions, the opening needed to place the build inside, and whether the base supports it without pressing scenery against the cover. A larger clear cabinet may suit a large diorama, but fit and closure matter more than the material or label: gaps leave a route for dust, while a tight or awkward opening can snag details during placement.
- Fit: Allow for the tallest elements and anything protruding from the footprint.
- Closure: Choose a cover that encloses the model without large gaps.
- Access: Make sure the diorama can be inserted and removed without catching details or taking it apart.
- Support: The base should sit securely without forcing the model against the cover.
Keep the display away from heat and direct sunlight. LEGO advises storing bricks in a dry place away from both; prolonged exposure can make them brittle or discolored over time. See LEGO’s storage guidance.

How do you dust LEGO without knocking pieces off?
For loose dust, start dry and gentle. The Canadian Conservation Institute says careful dry brushing or vacuum cleaning is the best approach for plastics. This is general conservation guidance, not a LEGO-specific test or procedure. The National Park Service also describes using a soft artist’s brush with a vacuum attachment for delicate objects; for an ordinary home display, a clean, soft brush alone is the simpler starting point.
- Set up the model. Work in a stable, well-lit place. Support the base so it cannot shift while you brush.
- Use a clean, very soft artist’s brush. Sweep lightly, guiding dust away from details. Brush only areas that feel stable; do not press on small pieces, fragile scenery, or projecting elements.
- Pause if anything moves. Stop if a piece shifts, a part is cracked, or you encounter sensitive decals, stickers, or applied details. Do not try to brush through resistance.
These steps are a cautious application of conservation advice for plastics and delicate objects, not an official LEGO method for dusting assembled models. Should I use a vacuum or compressed air?
A low-suction vacuum may help with stubborn dust in crevices on a stable model. Keep the nozzle above and off the build, and use a soft brush to guide dust toward it. Do not vacuum near unsupported pieces. Conservation sources describe reducing suction and using a protective screen for fragile objects; these are safeguards, not requirements for every LEGO diorama. The Library of Congress collection-emergency FAQ discusses protective measures for vacuuming fragile objects.
Avoid forceful compressed air around loose pieces or fine scenery. The National Park Service warns that forced air can be dangerous because it may blow off loose or fragile components. Its dusting guidance concerns wood objects, so apply the warning here as a practical precaution rather than LEGO-specific testing.

Can you clean a LEGO set without taking it apart?
For surface dust, dry brushing a stable assembled model may be enough. Washing is different: LEGO’s official instructions concern cleaning LEGO pieces, not dusting an assembled diorama. LEGO recommends hand-cleaning pieces with water no hotter than 104°F / 40°C and a soft cloth or sponge. It warns against washing machines and dishwashers, and against drying pieces in an oven, microwave, or hair dryer; higher temperatures may affect brick quality. Do not treat that water limit as permission to wet-wipe an entire assembled build. Water or detergent may reach inaccessible joints or sensitive decorations, stickers, and electronics. LEGO separately says electronic or other sensitive pieces containing metal should be cleaned with a cloth moistened with water and a mild detergent without perfume or oil. That instruction is for those pieces; it does not recommend spraying or submerging an assembled diorama.

Also avoid making a dusty surface your first cloth-cleaning step. Rubbing can drag particles across the plastic or decorations. If dry brushing does not work, or the model is valuable or fragile, keep it enclosed for prevention and seek specialist advice before wet or chemical cleaning.
