Use broad, diffused light and keep it off-axis from the camera. LEGO’s shiny plastic reflects small, direct light sources as bright hotspots, while hard light creates crisp, distracting shadows. Start with a simple background, soften the light with white fabric or a softbox, and adjust the setup based on what you see in test shots.
Set up the model and background first
Put the build on a stable surface and choose a background that supports the image you want. For a clean display or listing photo, curve a large sheet of neutral poster board behind the model to create a seamless sweep. For a scene or a larger MOC, a tabletop or LEGO-built setting can add context instead.
Keep the model and background in mind as separate areas to light. If the backdrop looks too dark, add light to the background rather than flooding the model and creating new reflections. An overhead light may even out the backdrop more than it helps illuminate the build. A plain white background is one option, not a requirement; miniature-photography guidance from Games Workshop likewise warns against lighting the background better than the subject (The Model Photograph).
Soften the light to tame reflections and shadows
LEGO’s glossy plastic can reflect lights directly into the lens or across the bricks. Brick Architect recommends diffusing the source with white fabric placed between the light and the model, or using a softbox; it notes that “diffuse lighting can greatly reduce glare and make for better-looking photos” (Photographing LEGO).

- Start with a broad source. Put diffusion between a lamp and the model rather than pointing a bare bulb straight at shiny bricks. A softbox is a purpose-built alternative.
- Try two lights. Place two lamps in front of the model, slightly to either side. This is a practical starting layout, not a fixed rule: move a lamp or the build until reflections fall somewhere unobtrusive and the front of the model is visible.
- Inspect shadow edges. Sharp, clearly defined edges indicate hard light; softer, less-defined edges suggest more diffused light. Games Workshop’s miniature photography guide recommends soft, even light and cautions that on-camera flash can create harsh, high-contrast results (The Model Photograph).
- Take a test frame after each change. Look for bright circular or rectangular reflections, dark areas that hide brick detail, distracting shadows, and unwanted color casts. Shift the light or model, or enlarge the apparent light source with diffusion, then check again.
Window light can be a no-cost starting point if you can control it with diffusion or a reflector. Avoid direct beams that create hotspots, and remember that daylight changes over time. The cited LEGO guide supports diffusion as a glare-control technique but does not provide a measured comparison of window light against lamps.
Choose a setup that fits the build

Keep color consistent across the photo
If you use more than one lamp, choose the same type or color temperature so one side of the model does not look noticeably warmer or cooler. For a quick check, see whether white or gray bricks look neutral in the image rather than tinted by the lighting.

For a batch of photos where color consistency matters, Brick Architect suggests using manual color settings, including occasional frames with a neutral gray card, and synchronizing calibration across the series (Photographing LEGO). That extra calibration is useful for repeatable work; it is not necessary for every casual picture.
Keep the camera steady and choose a useful viewpoint
A tripod or other stable support helps keep the image sharp when exposure takes longer, and a timer can reduce movement from pressing the shutter. Camera support addresses camera shake; it does not remove reflections or soften shadows.

Leave a little space around the build so you can crop later. Rectangular buildings can look distorted when photographed from an awkward angle, so watch how their edges converge. For small figures, a viewpoint near eye level can feel natural; with larger models, raising the camera slightly may reveal more of the shape. These are starting points—choose an angle that shows the details that matter in your particular build.

- Bright hotspot on a brick: Move or diffuse the light, or shift the model so the reflection lands outside the important details.
- Hard shadow edges: Increase diffusion or use a broader light source, then check the shadow again.
- Model looks good but backdrop is dark: Adjust the background illumination separately rather than increasing light on the model.
- One side has a different color cast: Check for mixed lamp colors and replace them with matching sources.
- Image looks soft: Stabilize the camera and consider a timer; this is a sharpness issue rather than a lighting fix.
