PS5’s console-wide graphics and display controls are under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Check the signal your TV reports, then configure resolution, HDR, 120 Hz and VRR only where your display and the game support them. For game-specific modes such as Fidelity, Performance or ray tracing, open that game’s own settings: those options are separate from the console’s video output controls.
Before changing PS5 video settings
Make one adjustment at a time so you can identify what changed if the picture becomes unstable. On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and note the current video output signal. It helps show which resolution and refresh-rate combination is active before troubleshooting.
The available output depends on the connected display and signal path. A high resolution or refresh rate is not a universal graphics upgrade: the TV or monitor must support it, and a game must support the corresponding frame rate for you to see that benefit in gameplay.
Choose a resolution your display supports
In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Resolution, leave the setting at Automatic for the console to select the highest resolution it detects the TV can support. You can choose a fixed resolution instead if you have a specific reason to do so.

For a 1440p display, select 1440p, then choose Test 1440p Output. The test checks supported combinations of SDR or HDR, 60 or 120 Hz, and VRR, so it can help clarify which features work together with that display.
Set up HDR without forcing it on everything
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR. Choose the option that matches how you want non-HDR content handled:

- Always On: non-HDR content is converted to HDR output as well.
To calibrate, select Adjust HDR in Video Output and follow the on-screen instructions. The PS5 supports HDR, but the resulting picture depends on the display and the rest of the home setup. PlayStation’s HDR setup guide covers enabling and adjusting the feature.
Use 120 Hz, VRR and ALLM when compatible
120 Hz Output
Turn on 120 Hz Output for a compatible display and a game that supports a 120 Hz frame rate. This setting allows the output mode; it does not make every game run at 120 frames per second. If a monitor or other display has output problems in games using these modes, turn 120 Hz Output off to troubleshoot.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
Enable VRR when both the display and the game support it. The optional Apply to Unsupported Games setting can be tried with games that do not officially support VRR; PlayStation says it may stabilize frame rate, but recommends turning it off if you notice unexpected behavior. Results vary by TV. See PlayStation’s PS5 features information for its overview of features such as VRR and ALLM.
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM)
On a supported TV, ALLM automatically switches the TV into a low-latency mode while gaming. VRR output may activate low-latency mode even when ALLM is set to Off. To turn off ALLM completely, turn VRR off as well. These behaviors require compatible equipment and current system software.

Leave signal-format controls alone unless troubleshooting
Video Transfer Rate
Keep Video Transfer Rate at Auto unless you are diagnosing flicker or another signal problem. If the screen flickers, PlayStation suggests trying -1 or -2. These settings limit some high-bandwidth output modes, including 4K/120 Hz and some 4K color formats; at 4K and 50/60 Hz, -2 uses YUV420.
Deep Color Output and RGB Range
Deep Color Output enables smooth image rendering. Do not routinely change RGB Range to improve the picture: PlayStation advises changing it only when the HDMI device is not sending RGB range information correctly.

Know which advanced features your PS5 model can use
Some image and resolution options are model- and display-dependent, rather than general PS5 graphics switches:
- Enhance PSSR Image Quality: on by default on supported CFI-7000 model group consoles, and improves image quality in certain compatible games.
- PS4 game image enhancement: also restricted to the CFI-7000 model group and requires a 4K or 1440p screen.
- 8K output: restricted to the CFI-7000 model group and requires an 8K/60 Hz display with DSC. VRR is disabled while outputting at 8K.
For the detailed supported resolution and output settings, consult PlayStation’s PS5 resolution guide.
Fix a cropped image or black border
If the picture is cut off at the edges or appears inside a black border, open Settings > Screen and Video > Screen > Adjust Display Area and follow the on-screen instructions.
Troubleshoot missing 4K/120 Hz or an unstable signal
If you expected 4K/120 Hz but get no picture or only 1080p/120 Hz, check the display and the full HDMI signal path before treating it as a console fault. Work through these checks:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Confirm the TV supports the desired 4K/120 Hz mode and has current firmware.
- Connect the PS5 to an HDMI port on the TV that supports the mode. Consult the TV manual; some sets require a setting to enable the relevant HDMI capability.
- Use the HDMI cable included with the PS5, or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. The included cable may already be sufficient.
- Connect the console directly to the appropriate TV port while troubleshooting. A receiver, switch or other device in the signal path can interfere.
- Review PS5 resolution and Video Transfer Rate settings, then check the current video output signal again.
Consider replacing the cable only if the included cable, correct TV port, firmware and signal path have been checked and the problem remains.
