What Does Your Dream Video Game Concert Look Like?

A dream videogame concert would let live music lead, use visuals to deepen the story, and give the audience one meaningful choice along the way.

My dream video game concert would feel like stepping through several game worlds without losing the thread of the music: an orchestra that can shift into electronic and rock textures, visuals timed to the score’s emotional turns, and one audience choice that genuinely changes what happens next. It would welcome newcomers while giving longtime players a few moments they recognize in their bones.

A concert with room to move between musical worlds

I’d start with a full ensemble, but not one locked into a single sound. Strings and brass could carry a sweeping theme; percussion and electronics could bring a faster, more urgent sequence to life; a solo instrument or small group could make a quieter moment feel close and personal. That mix would let a set move between the scale of an orchestral adventure and the pulse of a modern game soundtrack.

There are real precedents for both breadth and variety. Video Games Live describes a multi-game show with orchestras and choirs, soloists, exclusive game footage, synchronized lighting and interactive segments. The organizer says it has performed “over 500 shows in 42 countries on 5 continents”; its official page does not date that cumulative figure, so it is best understood as the organizer’s historical summary rather than a current-year count.

A broader program can make the evening welcoming even if no one person knows every featured game. By contrast, Paradox in Concert draws on music from 25 years of the publisher’s games, including Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, Victoria and Stellaris. Its hybrid orchestra combines classical and modern electronic soundscapes—a useful reminder that game music need not fit into one genre to belong in the same program.

Visuals that serve the music, not compete with it

I’d want the screen to deepen the performance rather than turn it into background footage. A visual sequence could begin with a recognizable image, then shift as the arrangement builds: a character’s journey, a landscape changing with the harmony, or a battle montage reaching its peak with the percussion. When the music falls away, the image could quieten too, leaving space for the musicians to hold the room.

ELDEN RING Symphonic Adventure describes orchestral music accompanied by 4K game montages synchronized to the story, along with original lighting and surround-sound effects. The Witcher in Concert likewise pairs gameplay and visuals with live orchestral music and traditional instruments; its arrangements are performed under composer Marcin Przybyłowicz’s supervision. These are distinct approaches, but both show how projected material can be part of the concert’s storytelling.

There’s a trade-off: imagery can add atmosphere for fans, but a montage may not mean much to someone unfamiliar with a particular game. I’d balance the spectacle with strong arrangements that work on their own, and make sure each visual sequence has a clear beginning and end rather than running continuously behind every piece.

One audience choice, with a real consequence

Audience participation would be welcome if it felt purposeful and optional—not a demand to use a phone throughout the show. I’d reserve one moment for a vote: choose which of two routes the performance follows, or select the encore from a short list. The musicians could then play the result, making the audience’s decision audible rather than merely decorative.

In Concert[Blu-ray]
  • Filmed at the BBC Radio Theatre, Van Morrison `In Concert' includes a selection of tracks, old and new, from his iconic back catalog through to his 2016 album, Keep Me Singing

VG Concerts describes Extra Lives as a narrated, choose-your-own-adventure show in which audience votes by phone steer the story while a live band performs. That is one particular format, not a standard feature of videogame concerts. The same listings also include other kinds of events, such as an official orchestral Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 concert.

Let the setlist feel like a journey

My ideal running order would have a shape rather than simply placing one recognizable theme after another. It might open with a short, energetic piece to bring the room together, move into contrasting worlds and textures, and give a slower, more intimate arrangement space to land before the finale. A few unmistakable motifs would reward fans, while the transitions and musical contrasts would give newcomers something to follow.

A single-game concert can build a more focused arc. The Witcher in Concert presents one game’s world through its music, visuals and traditional instruments. A multi-game show can instead move quickly between moods and styles. Neither approach is automatically better: the first offers continuity, while the second makes room for more kinds of music and more points of recognition.

Projected content also deserves thought. The The Witcher in Concert page notes that some imagery is best suited to audiences aged 16 and over; age guidance may vary by location. For a mixed-age event, clear local guidance and a program that does not depend on every image being appropriate for every attendee would help people decide whether the show suits them.

What would make the night work for more people?

The dream version would make the music rewarding even for someone who has never played the games on the screen. That means the performance should stand on its own, the visuals should illuminate rather than explain every reference, and the program should offer changes of scale—from full-orchestra impact to quieter passages. Fans could still get the emotional payoff of familiar themes without making knowledge of a franchise a prerequisite for enjoying the evening.

Practical details matter too: a venue and presentation that let people focus on the musicians, and clear information about projected content and the event’s format. Concerts make different choices about ensemble, visuals and participation, so there is no single template that suits every audience. The best design is the one whose musical and visual choices feel like parts of the same performance.
