If you want to play now, the best alternative to waiting for a PS6 depends on the games you want, the library and friends you already have, and whether you prefer a console, a desktop PC, or handheld play. A PS5 is the most direct choice for someone who wants PlayStation games today; Xbox makes sense when its games, community, or services suit you better; and a gaming PC or Steam Deck can offer PC storefronts or portability. No PS6 launch date was announced in the sources reviewed as of October 4, 2026, so waiting means accepting an uncertain timeline.

Should you wait for the PS6 or buy something now?

If you have games you want to play on PS5 now, buying a PS5 is the straightforward option. Waiting may be right if you are content with your current setup and want to make a decision after Sony shares official next-generation details. Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki was reported in August 2026 as saying a launch window for future-generation consoles had not been decided. That was a secondary report of an interview, not a formal PS6 announcement. The sources reviewed do not give a PS6 launch date, and the eventual timing remains uncertain. Read the report on Sony’s comments about future console timing.

Rather than choosing on rumors about a launch year, decide based on what you would play in the meantime and which platform fits your habits. Check current local hardware prices and availability before buying; the cited storefront information is US-specific and prices can change.

How the main alternatives compare

Option Best fit Key trade-off
PS5 Players who want the PlayStation ecosystem and PS5 games now. Choose a configuration based on your local price, storage needs, and whether you want disc buying. Check Sony’s current listing for available configurations. Sony’s US PlayStation store.
PS5 Pro PlayStation players who value supported visual and performance enhancements. It is a higher-tier PS5, not a requirement for new PS5 games; the benefits depend on whether a game is enhanced for Pro. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement.
Xbox Series S Players whose games, friends, or services favor Xbox and who are comfortable with digital-only purchases. Microsoft describes Series S as all-digital, so it does not suit buyers who need a console disc drive. Microsoft’s Series S listing.
Xbox Series X Players who want Xbox and prefer to compare available Series X configurations against their needs. Check current regional pricing, storage, and configuration; Microsoft’s 2026 announcement is not a live retail quote. Microsoft’s 2026 price update.
Gaming desktop PC Players who want PC storefronts, configurable hardware, or a desktop setup. There is no established like-for-like desktop build price or performance comparison here, so a cost-per-frame verdict against consoles would be unsupported.
Steam Deck OLED Players who want portable play and access to their Steam library. It is a handheld PC, not a direct substitute for a living-room console or high-end desktop. Valve’s Steam Deck specifications.

Choose a PlayStation: PS5 or PS5 Pro

A standard PS5 is the most direct alternative if your priority is to play on PlayStation now. Sony’s US direct store lists standard PS5 and PS5 Pro 2 TB configurations; check the live listing for the model, stock, and price available to you. View Sony’s US PS5 store.

What PS5 Pro adds

Sony released PS5 Pro on November 7, 2024. The company describes an upgraded GPU, faster memory, advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling. In its 2024 launch announcement, Sony said the Pro had 67% more compute units than the then-current PS5 and could render gameplay up to 45% faster. Those are Sony’s own launch claims, not independent benchmark results or a guaranteed uplift in every game. Enhancements vary by title and apply to games with PS5 Pro support. See Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement.

In the same September 10, 2024 announcement, Hideaki Nishino, then CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, said: “Whichever console option players choose, whether it’s PS5 or PS5 Pro, we wish to bring everyone the very best gaming experience that fits their needs.” In practical terms, consider Pro if supported visual and performance improvements matter to you; do not treat it as necessary for playing new PS5 games.

When Xbox Series S or Series X is the better alternative

Xbox is worth considering when the games you want, the people you play with, or the services you use point toward Xbox. Compare the actual titles you plan to play, your existing library and friends, console storage, whether you want discs, and your local price. The available evidence does not establish a comprehensive current hardware-performance ranking, so it cannot support a blanket claim that one console is categorically more powerful or better value.

Account for digital-only buying and 2026 price changes

Microsoft’s product listing describes Xbox Series S as all-digital; if you want to buy or use console game discs, factor that into your choice. Microsoft’s Xbox listing also says Game Pass is sold separately. Check Microsoft’s Series S product details.

Microsoft announced a worldwide Xbox hardware price update effective August 1, 2026: increases of US$100 for 512 GB console models and US$150 for 1 TB models, with the 2 TB model to be sunset. These are announced changes, not guaranteed prices at every retailer or a live quote for your country. Check current local listings and which configurations are available before comparing totals. When a gaming PC or Steam Deck makes sense

Desktop PC: prioritize flexibility, not an assumed bargain

A desktop gaming PC is a natural fit if you want PC storefronts, configurable hardware, or a computer-centered setup. There is not enough established information here to compare a particular PC build with a console on price or equivalent performance. Compare actual system specifications and local prices rather than assuming a PC is always cheaper or more expensive.

  • Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.

Steam Deck OLED: prioritize portability

Valve’s Steam Deck technical page lists OLED models with 16 GB of onboard memory, SteamOS, SSD configurations, microSD expansion, and a 7.4-inch OLED display. It is a portable way to play compatible titles from a Steam library, but its handheld form and role make it a different choice from a living-room console or a high-end desktop. Check Valve’s page for current configurations and pricing in your region. Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications.

Check game access before you commit

Do not assume a platform’s subscription catalog is permanent or identical across devices. Xbox’s March 2026 catalog post identifies listed games by availability on Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, or PC, and by membership tier. It is evidence that access varies by title and tier, not a complete current catalog or price list. Verify the specific game, platform, and tier before subscribing. See Xbox’s March 2026 catalog post.

A practical decision checklist

  • Start with your games: list the titles you most want to play and confirm their platform and release status.
  • Factor in your existing setup: a library, friends list, or accessories you already use may make staying in an ecosystem simpler.
  • Compare the full local purchase: check today’s hardware price, storage, available configuration, and any disc-drive needs where you live.
  • Count subscriptions only if you will use them: confirm the exact title, platform, membership tier, and current price instead of relying on an old catalog list.
  • Pick the form factor you want: console simplicity, a configurable desktop, or handheld portability are different benefits, not interchangeable performance labels.
  • Decide whether the wait is acceptable: if your current system meets your needs, waiting preserves your options; if you want to play now, choose based on the games and platform that serve you today.
