There is no demonstrated PS5 Pro test behind the 4K/60fps claim. Reports describe Digital Foundry running RPCS3 on a base PS5 after booting Linux. In that test, Ridge Racer 7 reportedly reached 4K at 60fps; results varied sharply by game, and some demanding titles ran far below that. This is an enthusiast setup, not an official PS3 compatibility feature.
What the PS5 Linux test actually demonstrated
The distinction between PS5 models matters: the coverage describes a base PlayStation 5, not a PS5 Pro. It therefore does not establish that the Pro can run Linux or RPCS3, nor that it achieves the same results. The PS5 Pro-specific question remains unverified by these reports; that is not proof the experiment is impossible.

The reported setup booted Linux from an SSD installed in the PS5’s M.2 slot and ran RPCS3 as a native Linux application using the RADV driver. Digital Citizen’s account says it did not rely on Proton translation. The games below are reported observations from coverage of Digital Foundry’s test, not independent tests or guarantees for every firmware or emulator version. (Digital Citizen; Push Square; Notebookcheck)
Reported performance varies by game
Resolution alone does not tell you whether a game runs well. The PS3’s Cell processor and its Synergistic Processing Units (SPUs) are difficult to emulate; games that lean heavily on that work can hit a CPU bottleneck even when the GPU can render a high-resolution image. Frame rate, pacing, and any required patches matter too.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
| Game | Reported result | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Ridge Racer 7 | 4K at 60fps; minimal stuttering in Notebookcheck’s account. | The strongest reported example, not a result for the PS3 library as a whole. |
| Resistance: Fall of Man | 4K output, generally around 30fps, with frame-pacing issues. | 4K output did not mean a steady 60fps. |
| Heavenly Sword | Near 30fps at 5120×2880 (2880p). | Very high output resolution can coexist with a lower frame rate. |
| GTA IV | Around 17fps at 720p in TweakTown’s account. | A reported CPU-side emulation bottleneck. |
| Metal Gear Solid 4 | Reported to struggle under CPU emulation demands. | No specific frame rate is established in the cited coverage. |
| Killzone 3 | Around 4K/30fps, with drops in some scenes; results improved after disabling MLAA through RPCS3 patches. | The reported result depended on a graphics-effect change and was not uniformly stable. |
| MotorStorm: Pacific Rift | Reported at 4K/30fps. | High resolution did not translate to 60fps. |
These figures are game-specific reports of Digital Foundry testing summarized by outlets, including TweakTown. They should not be read as a performance promise for other PS5 hardware, firmware, RPCS3 builds, or games.

The described route depends on an exploit and compatible firmware. Tom’s Hardware reported on April 29, 2026, that the public ps5-linux project supported original PS5 “Phat” consoles on firmware 3.00 through 4.51, with a separate umtx2 exploit needed for initial code execution. The article said 5.xx might have reduced-performance limitations and that 6.xx or later was ruled out for that project at publication. These are dated project-support details, not a current or universal compatibility guarantee—and they do not establish PS5 Pro support. (Tom’s Hardware)

- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Tom’s Hardware characterizes the method as a soft mod: the exploit has to be run again to boot Linux, while a standard reboot returns the console to normal PS5 operation. The process involves tools and may require display troubleshooting; it is not a supported option in the console’s settings.
What storage has to do with the setup
The reported arrangement used an SSD in the PS5 M.2 slot as part of the Linux setup. An M.2 NVMe SSD is therefore relevant to the described configuration, but no particular model was tested or endorsed. Storage does not bypass firmware restrictions, establish PS5 Pro compatibility, or solve RPCS3’s CPU-side emulation limits.
