Alan Wake 2: The Lake House draws on two different kinds of film horror: director Kyle Rowley cited Annihilation for its unsettling use of color and landscape, while lead writer Clay Murphy pointed to Alien for the cramped, workaday feel of a facility full of people doing their jobs. The developers described creative references, not a direct adaptation of either film.
How Annihilation informed the horror and color
In an October 22, 2024 interview with Digital Trends, game director Kyle Rowley said, “We were looking at, for example, Annihilation,” while discussing how to make the expansion’s horror feel different and use color in a more interesting landscape. The reference points toward an uncanny, visually distinctive environment rather than horror defined only by darkness.

That distinction matters for The Lake House: its setting is a research facility where experiments have brought reality into collision with the Dark Place. Rowley’s comparison describes a creative influence on the atmosphere and palette; it does not mean the expansion adapts Annihilation’s story.
How Alien informed the facility’s claustrophobic workplace
Lead writer Clay Murphy described a different reference in the same interview: “The reference for me for this one was actually Alien,” he said, explaining the appeal of confined space and people at work. The connection is less about a particular plot beat than the tension of being trapped in a workplace where routine duties continue amid danger.

The interview’s preview description notes brutalist architecture, eerie Pacific Northwest views, live-action research video, and colorful slime. Those are the reporter’s observations of the preview, not quotations from Rowley or Murphy; they help illustrate the contrast between a recognizable research workplace and the strange phenomena inside it.
What the film references mean for the DLC
The two influences have distinct roles in the developers’ framing:

This is a comparison of the creative purposes Rowley and Murphy described, not evidence that the DLC reproduces scenes or structure from either movie.
Where those ideas fit in Alan Wake 2
The Lake House is a survival-horror expansion set at the Federal Bureau of Control’s research facility beside Cauldron Lake. Its experiments have caused reality to collide with the Dark Place. Players control FBC agent Kiran Estevez, portrayed by Janina Gavankar; the story runs parallel to the main game’s events. Remedy describes a new multi-level location and adds the Painted enemy and Black Rock Launcher.

The FBC setting makes both references legible: this is a place built for research and routine, but its workers and architecture are caught in an increasingly unreal situation. Remedy also positions the expansion within the Remedy Connected Universe, making its FBC connection particularly relevant to players familiar with Control.

Remedy released The Lake House on October 22, 2024 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It requires the base game Alan Wake 2 and the Expansion Pass, which is included with the Deluxe Edition or can be obtained by upgrading. Remedy’s official FAQ says the physical Deluxe Edition is available for PS5 and Xbox Series X and includes the base game, Deluxe digital items, and Expansion Pass covering both Night Springs and The Lake House. The expansion requires an additional download, so it is not played directly from the physical disc.
