Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo reduce toxic encounters, use the game’s mute, block, privacy and reporting tools—and choose a non-PvP mode or private session if that specific game offers one. There is no universal setting that turns PvP off across online games. For parents and guardians, account and platform controls can further limit who a child can contact and whether they can use multiplayer.
Start by choosing where and how you play
Before joining a session, check the game’s mode selection, matchmaking and session-privacy options. If you want to avoid player-versus-player combat, select a clearly labeled non-PvP mode or private session when available. Some games may offer safe areas or other ways to reduce encounters, but availability and labels vary by title. If the game provides no PvP opt-out, changing a general privacy or chat setting will not necessarily prevent other players from attacking you.
Read the game’s code of conduct as well. Rules differ between publishers, so use the relevant title’s policy to decide what crosses the line. Bungie, for example, says competitive banter focused on the game is not inherently bad, while distinguishing it from harassment, demeaning or hateful conduct, threats and privacy violations in its Community Standards and Codes of Conduct.
Use mute, block and report for different problems
These tools have distinct purposes; use the one that fits the situation. ESRB’s guide to playing multiplayer games online describes muting as a way to stop verbal communication while continuing to play together, while blocking or unfriending can prevent further play or contact with that person where the service supports it. Reporting alerts the game or platform to conduct that may violate its rules.

- TRIFORCE TITANIUM 50 MM DRIVERS — Our cutting-edge proprietary design divides the driver into 3 parts for the individual tuning of highs, mids, and lows—producing brighter, clearer audio with richer highs and more powerful lows

- WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion
- Mute: Use it to end exposure to someone’s voice or text without necessarily leaving the current session.
- Block or unfriend: Use these options when you want to limit future contact, invitations or shared play. Their effects depend on the game and platform.
- Report: Use the in-game or platform reporting flow for behavior that appears to breach the posted rules. Choose the category that best describes what happened.
For repeated contact, review who can message, invite, find or view the account. Don’t share identifying details or account information. If a reporting flow requests evidence, preserve it only when you can do so safely; there is no single evidence procedure that applies to every service. Avoid retaliating, which can prolong the interaction and may itself breach the rules.
Review privacy and parental controls
Account settings can help limit unwanted contact, but the controls available depend on the game, platform, region and account type. EA documents privacy and block/ignore options for its services, and notes that platform restrictions can disable communication or multiplayer in its games. Roblox describes controls for interactions, privacy and parental oversight. See EA’s transparency-report page and Roblox’s safety tools and policies for those companies’ stated options.

For a child’s account, a parent or guardian can review communication, multiplayer, privacy and age controls together with the child. Explain that asking for help after an upsetting interaction should not automatically mean losing access to games; make sure they know how to mute, block and report, and when to come to you.
What a useful game safety system should include
Player controls help manage exposure, but they do not replace effective moderation. When assessing a game’s safety options, look for clear conduct rules, controls that are easy to find, reporting tied to the relevant behavior, and an explanation of how reports are reviewed and what enforcement can follow.

- Preventive controls: Privacy settings and content filters can reduce unwanted contact or exposure.

- Review and proportionate enforcement: Filtering can help, but context and human review matter; consequences may escalate for repeated or serious violations.
Publishers describe different approaches, which should not be assumed to apply across the industry. Nintendo says in its Online Safety Principles that it makes reporting violations easy and works to refine its codes and guidelines. EA describes proactive filtering, reports, technology and human moderation, and warnings or stronger actions in its content moderation overview. EA’s February 28, 2025 page on its 2024 transparency report says that more than half of content violations were minor disruptive behaviors that received a warning; EA says its research and analytics show warnings stop the majority of disruptive behavior. That is EA’s account of its own moderation findings, not an independent estimate for all games.
EA also says every EA game launches with an in-game reporting option. Its page describes Battlefield 6 voice reporting during play or at End of Round, with voice files from the round sent for transcription and moderation review; those details apply to that title and may change. Roblox says it made more than 100 safety enhancements in 2025. That is a company-reported count of activity, not a measure of how much toxicity fell.

Compare a game’s safety options before you commit
Because PvP and moderation controls are title-specific, compare practical capabilities rather than assuming one setting works everywhere.
| What to check | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| PvP avoidance | Can you avoid PvP through mode selection, matchmaking, session privacy or a safe area? |
| Mute and block | Can you reach these controls quickly, and do they limit only communication or future contact and play as well? |
| Reporting | Can you report the behavior in context, including voice if relevant? |
| Privacy | Can you control who contacts, invites, finds or sees the player? |
| Rules and enforcement | Are prohibited behaviors, review processes and possible consequences explained clearly? |
Official publisher and platform pages describe their own policies and tools, not an independently measured ranking of which interventions work best across games. The most useful setup is the one the specific game supports and the player can reliably use.
