1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart with QuakeSpasm for ordinary custom-map play. Try Ironwail if a demanding map makes rendering performance your priority; choose vkQuake if Vulkan rendering suits your setup; and use Quakespasm-Spiked or FTE when a map or mod specifically needs their extensions. No port is best for every map, so check the creator’s engine requirements before choosing.
What a Quake source port does—and what it does not
A source port is the engine that runs Quake and its community content. It is separate from TrenchBroom, a level editor for brush-based games such as Quake. TrenchBroom can launch external compilers and engines, but it does not replace the engine you use to play a map.

Custom content varies. A map may be a conventional BSP file, use a format intended for larger maps, or be distributed with a mod containing custom gameplay code and assets. A map opening in an editor does not establish that its mod or engine requirements will work in every port.
Which port should you choose?
| Port | What distinguishes it | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| QuakeSpasm | A modern, FitzQuake-based Quake engine. Its project README lists BSP2 and 2PSB map-format support. | You want a sensible starting point for conventional custom maps, unless the map author specifies another engine. |
| Ironwail | A QuakeSpasm fork whose project README describes a focus on high performance instead of maximum compatibility. It moves culling and lightmap work to the GPU and uses newer OpenGL features. | A complex map makes rendering performance a priority and its requirements fit Ironwail. |
| vkQuake | A QuakeSpasm-based port with Vulkan rendering. | Vulkan rendering is a good fit for your system and the map or mod supports the port. |
| Quakespasm-Spiked | An extension-oriented fork described as adding networking capabilities, QuakeC extensions, higher limits and modding features. | The map or mod calls for its added capabilities; they are not necessary for every map. |
| FTE | A modding-oriented engine index describes NetQuake support, multiple QuakeC built-in extensions, and support for maps and models from several games. | A particular mod or multiplayer setup expects FTE features. |
These descriptions are not a map-by-map compatibility test. QuakeSpasm’s documented BSP2 and 2PSB support is useful evidence when those formats matter, but it does not guarantee that every map, mod, or asset will work. Likewise, Ironwail’s performance focus should not be mistaken for a claim of maximum compatibility.

Check the map or mod before installing a different port
- Read the download’s instructions. Look for a named engine, required build, supported map format, or dependency on custom QuakeC and assets.
- Identify what you downloaded. A standalone map, a large-format BSP, and a mod that supplies gameplay code can impose different engine requirements.
- Follow an explicit recommendation. A mod author’s stated engine requirement takes precedence over a generic ranking of ports.
- If no requirement is given, start with QuakeSpasm. If a demanding map makes performance the issue, consider Ironwail; for extension-dependent content, consider the port the creator names.
Engine limits and formats are not identical across ports. TrenchBroom’s manual documents Quake map formats and game configurations, while the QuakeSpasm README specifically lists BSP2 and 2PSB support. Consult the map’s documentation rather than assuming that a file that loads in one engine will behave the same in another.
Why a mod-specific recommendation may differ
Some content depends on engine features that ordinary maps do not use. The progs_dump 3.00 manual search excerpt recommends Quakespasm, Ironwail 0.6.0 and later, and FTEQW revision 6282 and later for that mod. It says DarkPlaces and Mark V are no longer recommended for progs_dump, while noting that many features still work. Those thresholds and judgments apply to that mod; they are not a general verdict that the other engines cannot run custom maps.
