Quake’s levels make three-dimensional space part of the gameplay. Vertical routes, moving platforms, water, hazards, hidden passages and boss arenas change how players move, fight and explore; they are not just scenery around the action.
Verticality turns rooms into routes
Quake’s defining spatial move was to let players cross different planes of a level, not simply move across a flat floor. In a retrospective interview with GamesRadar+, designer John Romero said, “The goal of Quake’s level design was that we needed to explore verticality as much as possible,” so “you could be under a bridge but be on top of that bridge later.” He described a practical test: if a room could be recreated in Doom, it was not making enough use of Quake’s spatial possibilities. That is Romero’s account of the design goal, not a claim that Doom never used height.

This approach makes height useful for navigation and discovery. A bridge can divide a space into distinct routes; a ledge can become a destination rather than a backdrop. Romero also recalled platforming routes formed from wall pegs and protruding stones. Climbing them could lead to health or provide a way out of a room, making movement itself a small skill challenge even when the pickup was optional. Romero’s GamesRadar+ interview discusses both the vertical design goal and these examples.
Moving geometry makes traversal uncertain
Platforms and elevators turn the level into something players must ride and respond to, rather than merely cross. Romero recalled a moving platform that carried players on a ride, and an elevator that descended underwater, dealt damage, then surfaced near health. The suspense came partly from not knowing what would happen during the trip: authored movement and timing made the geometry a temporary set piece.

A separate example comes from E2M6, Dismal Oubliette. In a 1998 Game Developer feature, Romero described a descending room that stops and layers threats: a Shambler, spikes, a Fiend and Zombies. The sequence shows how a change in elevation can pace encounters and keep a player alert, rather than functioning only as an architectural flourish.
Water changes combat decisions
Quake carries familiar weapon use underwater, but makes movement slower than on land. Romero said retaining the ability to shoot was important to making underwater areas enjoyable. Water therefore changes the pace without making the player helpless.

The Lightning Gun creates a sharper environmental tradeoff: firing it into water can electrocute the player, unless the player is invulnerable. The same space that permits ordinary combat makes one weapon dangerous to use, so players must adapt their choice of weapon to the environment. Romero explains the underwater movement and weapon interaction in the GamesRadar+ interview.
Secrets reward exploration with more than collectibles
Hidden areas give players a reason to inspect the map and learn how its spaces connect. Romero said, “Putting secret areas in the game made it replayable.” Some secrets could provide a powerful weapon earlier than expected; secret exits could lead to an entire additional level. Those rewards make exploration consequential: curiosity can change what a player has available or which route through the game they discover.

Bosses can turn the arena into the puzzle
Romero singled out Chthon and Shub-Niggurath as encounters where ordinary shooting is not the whole answer. Chthon cannot simply be shot to death; the player must use lightning against him. For Shub-Niggurath, Romero said players had to pay attention to the environment and infer how to defeat the boss. These are specific examples, not evidence that every Quake boss uses the same kind of environmental solution. They show how an encounter’s setting can carry information the player needs to act on.
Movement limits help explain the scale of routes
The community-maintained Level Design Book’s Quake metrics reference lists vanilla Quake values of 320 units per second for maximum run speed, a 32 × 32 × 56-unit collision hull, and 244 units for maximum running jump distance. The page presents these as design-reference measurements, including maxima or estimates, rather than as an official id Software specification. It also cautions level designers against making specialty ramp, grenade or rocket jumps mandatory on the critical path.

These figures help explain why a route must be judged by what the player can reliably reach, not merely by how close ledges look. Optional climbing and secrets can ask for extra movement skill; a required route that depends on a specialty jump risks turning exploration into a bottleneck.

Quake’s unusual features reinforce one another. Vertical routes make the map worth reading; moving geometry turns some routes into timed experiences; water changes both movement and weapon risk; secrets reward close attention; and selected boss fights ask players to interpret the environment. Romero later noted that the thinking visible in the 1995 Quake FAQ differed substantially from the game that shipped, so the finished design should not be treated as a simple execution of the earliest concept. His 2016 retrospective makes that distinction.

Romero’s advice about landmarks and traps offers a useful way to understand the balance: distinctive features give a space personality and help players orient themselves, while hazards keep traversal tense. In this design, complexity earns its place when it changes a decision—where to go, how to cross, what to fire, or what to investigate.
