Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11First identify where the failure happens: in TrenchBroom while opening or editing the source map, during compilation, or when loading the compiled map in a game. The causes differ. For TrenchBroom, check the selected game and map format, the configured Quake directory and mod, then the map’s WAD references or loose-texture folder layout. If the console specifically reports QuakeForge’s W_LoadWadFile: unable to load gfx.wad, check whether QuakeForge can find its base pak0.pak file.
Start by identifying the failure stage
Do not treat every missing-texture symptom as the same problem. A texture absent in the editor, a compiler that cannot locate a WAD, and a game that fails to load a compiled map involve different steps and asset lookups. Note the exact error and where it appears before changing files.

- In TrenchBroom: the map may have the wrong game or format selected, the configured game directory may be wrong, or the editor may not be finding a WAD or loose materials.
- During compilation: check whether the WAD path recorded in the map points to a file the compiler can access.
- In-game: record the engine or port name and the full console message. The fixes below do not establish one universal cause for runtime failures across Quake engines and compilers.
Check TrenchBroom’s game and map format
TrenchBroom attempts to detect the game and map format from the map file, but detection can fail. If the map opens incorrectly or its resources are missing, verify that the editor is using Quake and the format the map actually uses. Quake maps can use Standard or Valve 220 format. See the TrenchBroom manual’s game configuration guidance.
This is a check for editor-side problems; it does not by itself explain every failure when loading a compiled map in-game.

Verify the configured Quake directory and active mod
TrenchBroom uses id1 as Quake’s default mod directory. Other mods are directories within the game directory and can provide their own assets. Make sure the game path configured in the editor points to the intended Quake installation and that the active mod is the one containing the assets the map needs. If the game is not configured correctly, the editor may not have access to its resources, including materials.
Use the TrenchBroom game configuration instructions to check the selected game and its directory. Quake and Quake II do not share an interchangeable asset layout: follow the instructions for the game you are actually mapping for.

Check WAD references for Quake textures
Quake maps can refer to WAD files through the wad property on the map’s worldspawn entity. TrenchBroom stores WAD paths there, and map compilers also use those references to locate WADs. If textures are missing in the editor or compilation cannot find a WAD, confirm that each referenced file exists at the path recorded in the map.
The wad value is a semicolon-separated list when it contains multiple paths. In TrenchBroom, use its WAD controls to add or reload the WADs, then verify that the resulting references point to files available to the editor and compiler. The manual explains WAD and texture collection setup.

Arrange loose custom images in TrenchBroom’s expected folders
If your custom materials are loose image files rather than textures in a WAD, TrenchBroom expects a particular folder depth: put a collection subdirectory directly inside textures, then place the image files in that subdirectory. The textures folder belongs under the configured game path or a loaded mod.
- Expected:
<game-or-mod>/textures/<collection>/texture-image - Not detected: image files placed directly in
textures. - Not detected: image files placed in folders nested more deeply than the collection subdirectory.
After correcting the layout, reload the materials in TrenchBroom. These folder-depth rules are for TrenchBroom’s loose materials; they are not a replacement for the WAD-based references used by a map or compiler. See the TrenchBroom manual.

For QuakeForge’s specific WAD error, check for pak0.pak
If QuakeForge reports W_LoadWadFile: unable to load gfx.wad, its FAQ says the most common cause is that QuakeForge cannot find pak0.pak. This guidance applies to that named QuakeForge error; it does not show that missing pak0.pak is the general cause of missing custom-map textures in other engines.
QuakeForge looks for the base file in $fs_userpath/id1 and $fs_sharepath/id1. According to the QuakeForge FAQ, those paths default to the current directory on Windows. On Linux and other Unix-like systems, the user path defaults to ~/.quakeforge and the share path to $prefix/share/games/quakeforge; distribution packages may use different locations. Check the paths used by your installation and ensure the required base data is present where QuakeForge searches.

If the map still will not load
Once the editor configuration and relevant asset paths are checked, use the exact runtime details to narrow the remaining problem. Quake engine variants and ports can handle data differently, so avoid applying QuakeForge-specific advice or Quake II directory instructions to an unidentified engine.
Quick Recap
- Record the engine or port name and the complete console error.
- Identify whether the map is a Quake map and, if known, whether it uses Standard or Valve 220 format.
- Note whether the failure occurs before compilation, during compilation, or only when loading the compiled map.
- For a texture problem, distinguish base game data, mod assets, WAD files, and loose images; check the path mechanism used for that asset type.
- If compilation is involved, check its output and whether the compiler can access the WAD paths recorded in
worldspawn.
