To watch a DVD, Blu-ray, or Ultra HD Blu-ray movie on an Xbox Series X, use a model with a disc drive and install the Blu-ray Player app from the console Store. The Xbox Series X Digital Edition has no disc drive, so it cannot play physical movies.
Which Xbox consoles can play movie discs?
The disc-drive Xbox Series X supports movies on DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. Xbox Wire’s Xbox Series X|S FAQ, published November 12, 2020, says to download the Blu-ray Player app from the console Store to play them.
Do not assume every console with “Series X” in its name has a drive: Microsoft’s UK Xbox Series X Digital Edition listing identifies it as digital-only and says it does not play physical discs. The Series S is also all-digital, and Xbox Wire says external USB disc drives are not supported; a USB DVD or Blu-ray drive is not a workaround.
How to play a DVD or Blu-ray on Xbox Series X
- Check that your console has an optical disc drive. A digital-only model cannot play physical movie discs.
- Connect the console to your TV and turn it on as usual.
- Open the Store on the console and download the Blu-ray Player app.
- Insert the DVD, Blu-ray, or Ultra HD Blu-ray movie disc. If playback does not begin, open the Blu-ray Player app.

- The new DVD drive will need to be “flashed” with your console’s security key or will need to have your old drive's board swapped into the new replacement drive. That's Mean That You need to transfer the PCB board from the old one to the new one since it's paired to the Xbox.

If the console will not play the disc
- Confirm the disc is a DVD, Blu-ray, or Ultra HD Blu-ray movie and that your console has a disc drive.
- Check the disc for visible damage and make sure it is inserted correctly.
- Look for a region marking on the disc or the back of its case. Sony’s general disc-support guidance explains that Blu-ray region codes may limit playback to players for a matching region. Xbox-specific region compatibility is not established by the cited Xbox format guidance, so do not assume every imported disc will work.
- If the disc is rejected after these checks, the cited Xbox material does not provide further troubleshooting steps for that situation.
