Then verify what is included and what remedy the seller offers if the disc will not install or launch.
Will the disc work on your Xbox?
Start with the exact console model and the exact game. A disc-shaped Xbox game listing is not enough to establish compatibility.
Check whether your console has a disc drive
Xbox Series S is digital-only and does not play physical discs. Xbox Series X supports physical discs. If you are unsure which model you own, check its model name before paying; a used disc cannot be used on a console without a drive.
Verify the specific game, especially for older generations
Some Xbox 360 and original Xbox games are supported on newer Xbox consoles, but backward compatibility is selective. Search the exact title in Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog rather than relying on the disc’s generation label or a seller’s general claim that it is “backward compatible.”

For a cross-region copy, check the particular disc and console combination. Microsoft documents one specific restriction: a disc configured for sale in China will not be compatible with consoles sold outside China. That rule does not establish a general region-lock policy for all Xbox discs. Xbox’s guidance on playing original Xbox games is another place to check for relevant compatibility details.
Inspect the actual disc and ask for a test
Request clear, recent photos of the data side of the disc, not only a stock image or a photo of the case. If possible, ask the seller to test that exact copy in a console compatible with the game. Ask which console was used and whether the disc installed and launched; “tested” without those details tells you little.

Visible damage, residue, or a seller’s inability to test the disc is a reason to ask follow-up questions or choose a listing with a clear return remedy. Appearance alone cannot guarantee that a disc will read, and there is no universal scratch-grade or visual pass/fail standard established here.
Microsoft’s handling advice is to hold discs by their edges, keep them in their cases, and avoid direct sunlight and heat. Xbox 360 manual

Know what installation does—and does not do
For supported disc-based play, a console may download or install game data to storage, but the disc must still be in the drive to launch and play. Installation does not turn the used disc into a standalone digital copy. If the console cannot read the disc, that can prevent you from using the physical copy even when game data is otherwise downloadable. Ask the seller specifically whether this copy installed and launched, not just whether the game worked for them at some point.
Treat disc-to-digital as an extra, not a guarantee
On August 26, 2026, Xbox announced that most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support claiming a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Series X console and launching the game. Xbox said thousands of titles were included at the start, but not every title would be available. Confirm what the listing includes
Decide whether you need a playable disc or a complete package. Ask whether the pictured case, cover art, manual, and inserts are included; a stock photo or a listing title does not prove they come with the copy. Packaging condition may matter more if you collect complete-in-box games than if you only want to play.

Used-disc grading and return arrangements vary by seller. Read the listing or ask before paying, especially if the copy is untested. Compare the total price for the same title and edition rather than treating all listings labeled “Xbox game” as equivalent. There is no established universal used-disc failure rate, scratch-tolerance threshold, market-price benchmark, or return right to use as a substitute for checking the seller’s terms.
