You can change your Nintendo Account country or region on Nintendo’s account website, but your eShop balance will not move with you. The rule for changing regions with money still in the account depends on the account’s current Nintendo service region: Nintendo of America accounts must spend the balance to $0 first, while Nintendo’s UK and Australia guidance allows a change after you accept losing the remaining funds.
Before changing your region, check these account conditions
- eShop balance: Confirm whether your current region requires a zero balance or offers a prompt to forfeit remaining funds.
- Automatic renewals: An active membership, subscription or pass can block the change. Nintendo UK specifically lists Nintendo Switch Online, Pokémon HOME Premium and in-game passes.
- Digital pre-orders: Cancel an outstanding downloadable pre-order that is not yet available.
- Supervised accounts: A child account’s country setting may be tied to the family group administrator’s country. Changing the administrator’s region may update related child accounts; requirements vary by region and account.
Nintendo’s instructions for the United States and the UK identify these as possible blockers. Check the support guidance for the region currently set on your account, since rules and confirmation steps are not established here for every Nintendo market. How to change your Nintendo Account country or region
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account website.
- Open User Information.
- Under Profile, select Edit or Change. The label differs between regional support instructions.
- Choose the new Country/region or Country/region of residence. If changing to Canada on a Nintendo of America account, choose Quebec or Not Quebec as prompted.
- Save the change, review the notice, and agree to confirm. If the site will not proceed, check for remaining funds, active renewals and unavailable digital pre-orders.
On Switch, the eShop country follows the country or region set on the Nintendo Account. Nintendo UK says the eShop for the new region becomes available the next time you open the eShop application after changing the account setting. Nintendo UK: eShop balance and changing country or region.
What happens to your eShop balance
Your existing balance does not carry over to the new country or region. It does not convert into the destination currency or remain available in the destination eShop. What you must do with a non-zero balance depends on your account’s current Nintendo service region:

Child accounts, prepaid cards and separate balances
Child or supervised accounts
Country settings for child accounts may be controlled through the family group administrator rather than changed independently. Nintendo’s regional instructions describe additional conditions, including extra confirmation steps for some child accounts when a family group changes to the United States or Quebec. Prepaid cards and download codes
A region-specific prepaid card is not a way to transfer an old balance. Nintendo Japan warns that codes sold for Japan may require the account’s country or region to be Japan. A compatible code adds funds for its market; it does not move existing funds between regions. Nintendo Japan code guidance.
Balances on different Nintendo Accounts
Nintendo Japan says balances are managed per Nintendo Account: you cannot spend another account’s funds or combine balances across accounts, and added balance cannot be refunded. Nintendo Japan balance rules.
