Pals are the creatures you capture and use as companions in Palworld: they can fight, help you survive and explore, and perform jobs at your base. Their work suitability shows which tasks they can do and how capable they are at each one. Breeding can help you pursue a particular species or inherited traits, but the best Pal for a job depends on more than one rating.
What are Pals in Palworld?
Pals are capturable creatures that support several parts of the game. Pocketpair’s official Palworld overview describes more than 200 distinct Pals with different skills. You can weaken creatures and capture them with Pal Spheres, then add them to your team.
On a team, Pals can contribute to combat, survival, and exploration. At a base, suitable Pals can help with production, crops, resources, and power. They are not interchangeable: each Pal has its own abilities and work suitability, and their food, rest, and morale affect how well they operate.
What do work skills and work suitability mean?
Work suitability is the game’s rating for the base jobs a Pal can perform. “Work skills” is a useful informal way to refer to those jobs. A Pal may be suitable for several tasks, with a separate level for each; a high level in one task does not make it equally capable at the others.

How to choose a worker
- Match the job to the bottleneck. If crafting or smelting is slowing progress, assign a Pal with suitability for that task rather than choosing one for a high rating in an unrelated job.
- Compare versatility with specialization. A Pal with several useful jobs can cover gaps around a base, while a focused worker may be a better fit for a task that needs consistent attention.
- Consider partner skills. A Pal’s partner skill can affect its value alongside its work-suitability levels.
- Account for acquisition and investment. A strong candidate may be difficult to obtain or require handbook or condenser investment. PC Gamer’s August 14, 2026 comparison discusses trade-offs such as job level, versatility, and availability; its picks are editorial recommendations, not official rankings.
- Check the base itself. A worker needs to reach its work area and have access to food and rest. Pathing, sanity, research requirements, and base setup can undermine a promising suitability rating.
Can work suitability be increased?
An unofficial guide to versions 1.0/1.0.4 describes a level-10 suitability cap in version 1.0, improvement through the Pal Essence Condenser, and handbooks that add a level only to a job the Pal already has. It also says wild values commonly fall short of that cap. Treat those as version-specific guidance, not permanent rules: check the current patch and the item’s in-game description before spending resources.

How does breeding Pals work?
Breeding is a way to pursue a particular offspring and traits for a chosen role, whether that is combat, movement, or base work. The Palworld Companion breeding guide, updated July 17, 2026, describes using a Breeding Farm and Cake with two compatible parents of different genders.
- Choose the goal first. Decide whether you want a particular species or a Pal suited to a defined combat or work role.
- Choose parents and check compatibility. Confirm the parents meet the current game’s breeding requirements; do not assume a pairing guarantees a specific result.
- Use a current breeding reference for combinations. Outcomes and exact combinations are version-sensitive, so verify them against an up-to-date guide or the game rather than relying on a remembered pairing.
- Improve the resulting Pal if needed. For later optimization, the guide identifies species, IVs, passive skills, condensing, and Awakening as factors to consider.
For a beginner, the practical starting point is the desired species and role. Inherited passives and other optimization systems matter when you are refining a build; detailed combinations and probabilities should be checked against current information.

How to use Pals effectively at a base
- Identify the work that needs attention. Look for the job currently limiting production or progress.
- Assign a Pal suited to that job. Compare its level for the specific task, relevant partner skill, and whether its other jobs are useful to your layout.
- Make the work area practical. Keep routes clear and ensure the Pal can reach the station or farm it needs to use.
- Provide care. Food, rest, and morale matter to efficient operation, as Pocketpair’s official overview notes.
- Reassess as the base changes. A flexible worker may be useful while a base is growing; a specialist may be preferable once one task becomes a persistent bottleneck.
- Check version-specific advice. Work levels, available Pals, item names, and progression requirements can change between updates.
