Sometimes. A Japanese Nintendo Switch game can be played in English only if that specific game edition includes English. Changing the Switch’s language can select a language the game supports; it cannot add a translation the game does not contain.

How to tell whether a Japanese Switch game supports English

Check the official language information for the exact Japanese edition you plan to play. A Japanese release may include English, but the fact that its game card works in your console does not establish that English is available. Nintendo’s general compatibility guidance does not list the languages for individual titles.

Nintendo says software uses the selected console language only when that language is supported by the software. Its support page also notes that multilingual support varies by title: Can I Play My Game in Another Language?

Set the Switch language to English

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Scroll down and select System, then select Language.
  3. Choose English. If you changed the setting, the console will restart and close any suspended software.

The language menu also includes French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean. Those are system-setting choices, not a promise that every game supports them. If the Japanese edition supports English, selecting English should make the game use it; if English is not supported, this setting will not translate the game. See Nintendo’s instructions for changing the system language.

Does a Japanese game card work on a US or European Switch?

Usually, but card compatibility and language support are separate questions. Nintendo says Switch game cards are not region-locked, except for consoles and cards distributed in the Chinese region. That does not tell you whether a particular game includes English.

Nintendo cautions that it has not tested every overseas title across consoles from every region, so it cannot guarantee full service and support. It recommends buying software made for the console’s region. Region information is shown on the game packaging or under Software Information > Support Information. Read Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Regional Compatibility FAQ for the full qualifications.

Check DLC separately

DLC has its own region-matching requirement: Nintendo says, “DLC will only work with games that are released for the same region as the DLC.” An imported Japanese game may therefore be playable on your console yet fail to work with DLC from another region’s eShop. Nintendo Japan specifically warns that overseas copies may not work with additional content sold in Japan’s eShop; see its guidance on overseas software.

Your Nintendo Account’s country setting determines which country’s eShop you access, according to Nintendo’s regional compatibility FAQ. Do not assume that changing eShop access will make DLC regions compatible: match the DLC to the game edition’s region.

Before buying a Japanese Switch game

  • Confirm English is listed for the exact Japanese edition, using official language details rather than the game’s country of sale or a different edition’s listing.
  • Check the card’s region information on its packaging or in Software Information > Support Information, and account for the Chinese-region exception.
  • Match any DLC region to the region of the game edition.
  • Set support expectations: Nintendo says overseas software is not tested title by title across every console region and full service and support are not guaranteed.
