If you own physical Xbox games, choose a disc-equipped Xbox Series X: Xbox Series S cannot play game discs. Both consoles run selected backward-compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games, but compatibility depends on the title. On Series X, a supported disc helps verify ownership; the game downloads to console storage, and you keep the disc inserted to play.

Xbox describes Series X as available with a UHD Blu-ray Disc player, so check the exact Series X configuration sold in your region before buying. Which older Xbox games work on both consoles?
Series X|S supports selected games from Xbox One, Xbox 360, and the original Xbox. Xbox says most Xbox One games are playable, but there are exclusions; features can also vary from one game to another. That does not mean every game from those generations works, or that every supported title retains all of its original features.
Check the official backward-compatible games catalog for the particular game before you rely on it. Eligible digital games appear in your library for installation. For original Xbox titles, Xbox notes that original Xbox Live services—including online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces—are unavailable; supported offline multiplayer scenarios may still work.

How does a backward-compatible disc game work on Series X?
- Check that the title is supported in Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog and that your Series X configuration has a disc drive.
- Insert the game disc. For an eligible title, the console downloads the game to its storage; the disc is not simply played directly as the installed game.
- Leave the disc in the drive when you play. It is needed to verify ownership after installation.
Xbox says more than 500,000 hours of testing went into testing and meeting quality standards for Series X|S gameplay; its backward-compatibility page does not state a publication year for that figure. It is Xbox’s own figure, not an independent measurement.

Not for a Series S owner trying to use a physical disc: Series S still has no disc drive and cannot read one. In an Xbox Wire announcement dated August 26, 2026, Xbox said Xbox Insiders could begin testing a feature on August 31 that lets players insert a supported Xbox One or Series X disc and launch the game to claim a digital entitlement. The announcement said most Xbox One and Series X disc-based games support the feature, while also warning that not every title would be available at launch.

Xbox described the claimed entitlement as potentially enabling digital benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported; the physical disc would continue to work as before. The announcement describes a dated Insider test and rollout, not a universal conversion of every disc or confirmation that every player can use it now. Check Xbox’s August 26, 2026 announcement and the current eligibility information for the title before counting on digital access.

Which console fits a physical game collection?
- Choose a disc-equipped Series X if you need to play supported physical games or backward-compatible discs. Verify the specific model available to you.
- Choose Series S only if digital access suits you. It can play eligible backward-compatible games, but physical discs are not an option.
- Check your must-play titles individually. Compatibility is selective on both consoles, and game-specific services or features may differ.
