Then enable 120 Hz output and VRR only when both are compatible, calibrate HDR and brightness for your screen, and treat motion blur, field of view, and display-side controls as game- or model-specific choices—not universal presets.
Check your PS5 and display before changing settings
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review Information for the Connected HDMI Device and Current Video Output Signal to see the connected display’s reported resolution, VRR, and HDR capabilities. With resolution set to Automatic, the PS5 selects the highest resolution the TV supports. The actual experience still depends on the display, HDMI connection, game, and the game’s selected mode. PlayStation’s PS5 4K resolution guide describes the output settings and compatibility checks.
Which PS5 video settings should you use?
| Setting | Practical starting point | What it does and what to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| 120 Hz Output | On, if your display and the specific FPS game support 120 Hz. | Enables the PS5’s 120 Hz output path for games that support a 120 Hz frame rate. It does not make every game render at 120 Hz. |
| VRR | Automatic, if the display and game support VRR. | Synchronizes display refresh with console output and may reduce tearing or frame-pacing problems. Results vary by game, display, and visual mode. |
| Apply to Unsupported Games | Optional; try it only if you are willing to check the result in each game. | Sony warns that applying VRR to unsupported games can produce unexpected visual effects. |
| ALLM | Leave available or automatic on a TV that supports it. | Automatically switches a supported TV to its low-latency mode during gameplay. HDMI 2.1 branding alone does not confirm support for every feature. |
| HDR | On When Supported is a cautious choice when you do not want SDR content converted to HDR. | Always On converts unsupported content to HDR output; On When Supported leaves unsupported content in SDR. Neither is the best choice for every screen or player. |
| RGB Range | Leave at its normal automatic behavior unless you have a range mismatch. | PlayStation recommends changing it only when an HDMI device does not send range information correctly. |
These settings are in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. For HDR, use Adjust HDR and the game’s own calibration controls for the display you are using rather than assuming a console-wide mode will improve visibility in every title. PlayStation’s guide explains the console options.
When 120 Hz output is worth enabling
Enable 120 Hz Output when your display supports it and the shooter offers a mode that uses a 120 Hz frame rate. The setting makes that output available; the game determines whether it uses it, and some games require you to select a performance or frame-rate mode in their own menus. Such modes can make a game feel more responsive, but may trade away resolution or visual detail depending on the title.

If enabling the setting causes a blank screen, flicker, or a lower-than-expected output, troubleshoot the signal path before buying a cable:
- Check that the TV or monitor supports 4K at 120 Hz, if 4K/120 is your target, and install its current firmware.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the display rather than through an AV receiver or other device, and use the HDMI port designated for the desired high-bandwidth features.
- Try the PS5’s included HDMI cable first. If needed, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
- In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p, and Video Transfer Rate to Automatic.
- If the screen flickers, Sony says setting Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2 may help, but this can limit some output formats.
- If the display still has trouble with 120 Hz output, turn 120 Hz Output off and check the display and game documentation for compatibility details.
These checks follow Sony’s 4K/120 Hz troubleshooting guidance; they do not mean every setup needs a replacement cable.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Should you turn on VRR?
If both the game and display support VRR, set the PS5 option to Automatic. Sony describes VRR as dynamically syncing a compatible display’s refresh rate to the PS5’s graphical output, which can minimize or eliminate visual artifacts such as tearing and frame-pacing issues. Whether that improves the picture or feel depends on the game, TV or monitor, and selected visual mode. The official explanation is in a PlayStation Blog post dated April 25, 2022; its original game list should not be treated as a current compatibility list because support can change through game updates.
On a supported TV, ALLM can switch into a low-latency game mode automatically. Sony notes that VRR output can trigger low-latency mode even when ALLM is set to Off, so the behavior may depend on the signal and display rather than one toggle alone. Check the TV’s manual for its own game-mode and VRR behavior. PlayStation documents these output options.

In-game settings that can help you see and track targets
There is no single numerical FPS preset established for every shooter. Look for these options in the game’s own settings, then compare the result in a familiar practice area or match:
Performance or frame-rate mode
If responsiveness is your priority, try the mode that prioritizes frame rate. The game may reduce resolution or other visual effects in exchange; the exact tradeoff is title-specific.

- Ultra Customizable Controls
- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
Motion blur
If movement smears targets or makes panning harder to follow, test a lower motion-blur setting or disable it. The effect is subjective and game-specific, so use what makes motion easiest for you to read.
Field of view
If the game offers an FOV slider, a wider view can reveal more peripheral space, while making distant targets appear smaller. Adjust it gradually and judge whether the added peripheral view is worth the change in target size.

Brightness and HDR calibration
Use the title’s calibration screen and distinguish visibility from preserving intended contrast. Raising brightness indiscriminately can make dark areas look gray rather than revealing useful detail. Calibrate for the actual display and revisit the setting if you change screens or HDR modes.
Reticle, color, and accessibility options
Set reticle shape, color, and other available visual or accessibility options to suit your eyesight and the game’s backgrounds. These controls vary by title; do not assume a particular menu or option exists in every shooter.
Display controls can involve clarity tradeoffs
Some monitors add controls for dark-scene visibility, blur reduction, response time, or latency. Their names and interactions are model-specific, not PS5 system settings. For example, Sony’s SDM-27U9M2 monitor guide describes a Black equalizer from 0 to 10, with larger values improving visibility in dark areas on that monitor. Its Latency control trades reduced latency at higher values against reduced blur reduction, and its response-time options are Standard, Fast, and Faster.
That same monitor’s guide says Adaptive-Sync/VRR can suppress stutter and tearing, but enabling VRR prevents use of Motion blur reduction on that display; blur reduction also does not work below a 100 Hz input signal. This illustrates why you may not be able to combine every clarity feature. Check your own display’s manual, and compare the image and controls in practice rather than assuming another model behaves the same way.
