Start by identifying whether the problem is online delay, visible frame hitching or freezing, or a controller fault. Those symptoms can feel similar but have different causes: check whether the issue affects one game or several, and whether it follows your controller into other games and menus. Then try the least disruptive fix for that symptom.
Fix online lag, rubber-banding, and disconnects
If opponents teleport, actions arrive late, or you disconnect, first check whether the issue is limited to one game. A local frame-rate problem or controller fault will not be fixed by changing your internet connection.
- Check PlayStation Network service status.
- On PS5, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Menu wording can vary by system software or region.
- Restart the PS5. If you use Wi-Fi, move the console closer to the router and reduce obstructions between them.
- Restart the router and modem. For the connection-error procedure, PlayStation instructs users to turn them off and wait at least five minutes before restarting.
- Test the same game again, then compare it with another online game or service.
PlayStation’s CE-105799-1 guidance says: “Restart your PlayStation®5 console, and connect to the Internet using a wired connection as much as possible.” See PlayStation’s CE-105799-1 troubleshooting steps. If you already have a suitable Ethernet cable, try it to compare wired and Wi-Fi performance; buying one is optional and will not fix a server outage, game-specific bug, local frame hitch, or controller fault.
If several games or services fail, focus on your home connection or PlayStation Network status. If only one game remains affected, consult that game’s publisher. Network conditions and server problems may be outside your control. Avoid starting with port forwarding, a static IP, or custom DNS: PlayStation lists advanced network changes for a specific server-connection error, but they are not universal lag fixes and may require router or ISP assistance. The relevant connection guidance is at PlayStation Support and PlayStation’s general connection troubleshooting page.

Troubleshoot stuttering, freezing, or crashes
Visible hitching, a game freezing, or a crash is different from online latency. Check whether it happens in one title or across multiple games before changing console settings.
- Confirm the game has finished installing. Check for a game update and make sure PS5 system software is current.
- For a disc game, gently clean the disc and, if possible, test another disc. For a digital game, verify its download and installation status.
- If the problem is tied to a particular point in the game, try starting from the beginning to check whether the save is involved.
- If simpler checks fail, reinstall the affected game. If only that title is affected, contact its publisher; if several games are affected, continue with console-level troubleshooting or PlayStation Repairs.
PlayStation’s steps for games that freeze or crash distinguish disc and digital troubleshooting; see PlayStation’s game-freeze and crash guide. Do not jump straight to a console reset: Reset PS5 erases data saved on console storage. Back up important data before any data-erasing reset.

- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Fix DualSense input, pairing, or stick problems
Check whether aiming or button input feels wrong in multiple games and menus, and whether the problem follows one controller. A reset can address some connection or software issues, but it cannot repair a worn or damaged stick or button.
- Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the DualSense controller.
- Use a pin or similar small object to press the reset button in the small hole on the back of the controller for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to the console with its USB cable, then press the PS button.
- Update PS5 system software if the problem continues.
Follow the official DualSense wireless controller troubleshooting instructions. If the same stick or button remains faulty after reset and software checks, contact PlayStation support or repairs rather than treating a reset as a hardware repair. The controller’s USB cable is normally sufficient for reconnection; the steps do not establish a need to buy a replacement cable or repair kit.

Use Safe Mode for problems across games
If symptoms persist across several games, Safe Mode offers targeted system tools. Turn off the console, then press and hold the power button; release it after the second beep. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button to navigate. Follow the on-screen prompts and choose a targeted option rather than a data-erasing reset.
- Clear System Software Cache: PlayStation suggests this for system feature issues or performance drops. It is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed frame-rate fix.
- Repair Console Storage: Intended for startup or storage issues; PlayStation says it does not erase data.
- Rebuild Database: Scans the drive and creates a new content database.
PlayStation describes these and the other options in its Safe Mode guide. Reserve Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) for later troubleshooting: they erase data, so back up first. If the problem continues, contact PlayStation Support.

Choose the next step by symptom and scope
| What you observe | First checks | Next step if it persists |
|---|---|---|
| Online delay or disconnects in several games | Service status, connection test, restart PS5 and router, improve Wi-Fi placement | Compare wired connection; investigate the home connection or PlayStation service |
| Online problem in one game only | Test another online game or service | Contact the affected game’s publisher |
| Visible hitching or freezing in one game | Check install completion, updates, disc or download, and whether the issue follows a save | Reinstall or contact the publisher |
| Stuttering or crashes across multiple games | Update system software and check Safe Mode tools | Back up before any reset; contact PlayStation Support if unresolved |
| Aim, stick, or button issue follows one controller | Test in other games and menus; reset and reconnect the DualSense | Contact PlayStation support or repairs if a physical control remains faulty |
Use reversible checks first. The right troubleshooting path depends on whether the symptom is online, local to a game, or tied to a controller; no single setting or reset fixes every kind of “PS5 lag.”
