What a spouse’s shop and income actually mean
Marriage is described as providing access to a spouse shop, the ability to collect its proceeds and trade with the spouse, daily cooking, and a choice of living in the spouse’s home or the player’s home. The Skyrim Wiki’s community-edited marriage overview describes those benefits, but does not establish that a visible storefront appears in the world.
An older GameFAQs Skyrim Special Edition character guide reports the shop benefit as 100 gold per day. A 2022 Steam Community discussion quotes UESP as saying “100 gold or more a day” accumulates. The direct UESP page was not available for verification, so treat these as guide and secondhand descriptions of the mechanic—not a confirmed current payout guarantee for every edition or spouse.
Some guides distinguish candidates who are already merchants from those who are not. That distinction may matter to role-play or trading convenience, but the available sources do not show that it changes the spouse-shop payout. Nor do they confirm an actual player-accessible shop building for a particular game edition or mod setup.

How to choose the right spouse for your priorities
Candidate traits and unlock requirements can depend on game progress and version. The older Elder Souls marriable-characters guide organizes candidates by property, follower status, merchant role, and marriage conditions. Use those as comparison questions rather than as a definitive current roster:
- Home fit: Does the candidate have a home you would want to use, or would you rather have them move into a player-owned home?
- Follower fit: Can the candidate accompany you, and would that be more useful than having a spouse stay near home?
- Merchant fit: Is the candidate already a merchant, or are you mainly looking for the general spouse-shop interaction?
- Unlock effort: What quest, favor, or other progress is needed before marriage dialogue becomes available?
- Income expectations: Guides report a daily shop benefit, but the evidence does not support ranking spouses by earnings or guaranteeing a particular current-version amount.
Two candidates to compare by play style
Aela: a follower-oriented example
The older Elder Souls guide lists Aela as a follower, merchant, and trainer. That makes her a reasonable candidate to investigate if you value those roles alongside marriage. The listing does not establish that she pays more shop income than other spouses, and her current requirements should be checked against your game progress.

Aeri: a home-and-favor example
The same guide lists Aeri as having a home and a favor condition. She is a useful comparison if the prospect of a spouse with an existing home matters more to you than follower utility. The guide is older, so confirm the marriage dialogue and prerequisite in your game rather than assuming the listing covers every edition or mod setup.

For the shop-income question, the sources support a broad marriage benefit, not a reliable spouse-by-spouse earnings ranking. The meaningful differences to weigh are practical and personal: where you can live, whether you want a follower, whether merchant status matters to you, and how much progress the marriage unlock takes. If income is your only criterion, the evidence does not identify a best spouse.
