The Sony PULSE 3D is a sensible choice if you mainly play on PS5 and want a straightforward wireless headset with console-integrated audio controls. Its appeal is less convincing if you need long-session comfort, extended battery life, or a boom microphone with strong PC voice pickup. Sony estimates up to 12 hours of wireless play, and independent reviewers identify both useful PS5 features and comfort, build, and microphone compromises.
What the PULSE 3D does well on PS5
PlayStation says the headset is specifically tuned for the 3D Audio made possible by PS5. That is official product positioning, not a guarantee that every game produces 3D audio: Sony’s manual says PS5 3D audio works when the game supports it. The headset also works for ordinary stereo audio.
PS5 sound settings include EQ presets for the headset and slots for saved custom settings. PlayStation announced the EQ feature in a 2021 PS5 system update. On the headset itself, controls include master volume, mute, mic monitoring, and game/chat balance. The game/chat balance control works only with PS5 or PS4.
Connections and compatibility
| Connection | What it supports | Limits to know |
|---|---|---|
| Included USB wireless adaptor | PS5, PS4, and compatible Windows and macOS computers. Sony’s manual also says USB audio-capable devices can work with the adaptor. | Computer compatibility is stated as compatible Windows and macOS computers; the manual does not establish support for every system or configuration. |
| Included 4-conductor 3.5 mm cable | Wired use with compatible devices, including PS VR and mobile devices listed by Sony. | Headset controls are unsupported on those devices, and mobile 3D audio is not supported. Game/chat balance is limited to PS5 or PS4. |
The USB adaptor is the relevant option for wireless play; the cable provides a wired fallback. The PULSE 3D should not be treated as a Bluetooth headset: Bluetooth support is not listed in Sony’s product specifications or manual.

Sound, microphone, and controls in practice
Sound
TechRadar praises the straightforward setup and decent stereo sound, while RTINGS describes low wired audio latency and PS5 virtual surround support. Those assessments point to a headset that covers common console gaming needs, rather than one that stands out as a universal audio choice. 3D audio remains conditional on game support.
Microphone
Sony equips the headset with two built-in noise-cancelling microphones, plus mute and mic-monitoring controls. TechRadar calls microphone quality fairly good. RTINGS, however, notes that voice can sound quiet when the headset is wired to a PC. If clear voice communication across PC games is a priority, compare it with headsets that use an adjustable boom microphone.

Game/chat balance
The dedicated game/chat balance control is useful for adjusting the mix without navigating menus, but it is a console-specific convenience: Sony says it works with PS5 and PS4 only. Do not assume the same control will work when the headset is connected to a computer, PS VR, or mobile device.
Comfort, build, and battery life
Sony lists approximate dimensions of 213 × 190 × 91 mm and an approximate weight of 292 g. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent fit measurements. RTINGS flags possible discomfort during long sessions, while TechRadar criticizes the plastic bridge. Fit and comfort vary by wearer, so those reviewer observations are reasons to try the headset when possible rather than a prediction that it will feel uncomfortable for everyone.

Sony’s 2020 PS5 FAQ estimates up to 12 hours of wireless play on the built-in rechargeable battery. “Up to” is a manufacturer estimate, not a promise of that runtime under every volume level or use pattern. Sony’s instruction manual says a full charge from empty takes approximately 3.5 hours. TechRadar considers the battery short for its needs, making endurance a clear trade-off for players who regularly have long sessions.

RTINGS identifies the PULSE Elite and SteelSeries Arctis 7P as alternatives with advantages on several comfort, microphone, and battery dimensions. Its comparison is reviewer-specific, and comfort or sound preferences are not universal.

| Headset | Advantages noted by RTINGS | Trade-off or distinction noted |
|---|---|---|
| Sony PULSE 3D | Consistent audio delivery in RTINGS’ comparison. | Its built-in microphone, comfort, and battery life compare less favorably on the dimensions RTINGS highlights. |
| Sony PULSE Elite | Bluetooth, a retractable boom microphone, greater comfort, and longer battery life. | RTINGS’ cited comparison does not provide a specific runtime figure here. |
| SteelSeries Arctis 7P | More comfortable fit, a better boom microphone, and longer battery life. | RTINGS says the PULSE 3D delivers audio more consistently. |
Before choosing between them, weigh the things that affect your own use: whether you need Bluetooth, whether a boom mic matters, how long you wear a headset at a time, and which platforms you use. Check current local prices and availability before buying; the reviewed sources do not establish today’s price or stock.
Quick Recap
Who should buy the PULSE 3D?
- Consider it if you mainly play on PS5 or PS4, value simple wireless setup, and want built-in game/chat and mic-monitoring controls.
- Look elsewhere or compare carefully if you prioritize long-session comfort, battery life beyond Sony’s up-to-12-hour estimate, Bluetooth, or an adjustable boom microphone.
- For PC use, confirm your computer works with the USB adaptor and consider whether the reviewer-reported quiet voice pickup over a wired connection is a concern for your calls or games.
