1. Ask Maramal about marriage in Riften
Find Maramal at the Temple of Mara in Riften and ask him about the city’s marriage custom. He may also be at the Bee and Barb when you first look for him. Talking with him introduces the marriage process and lets you buy the required amulet. GameFront’s guide notes both possible locations.
2. Get and wear the Amulet of Mara
Maramal sells the Amulet of Mara for 200 gold pieces, according to Prima Games’ Skyrim marriage guide. Equip it before speaking to a potential spouse: simply carrying the amulet is not enough to enable the marriage conversation.
3. Meet the chosen NPC’s requirement
The amulet does not make every NPC available for marriage. A potential spouse may require you to complete a favor, quest, or other prerequisite first. These conditions vary by character, and the cited guides do not establish a complete candidate-by-candidate list.

Once you have met that character’s condition, speak to them while wearing the amulet. If the NPC is eligible, the marriage dialogue can proceed; accept their interest to move on to arranging the wedding.
4. Arrange and attend the wedding
After the NPC accepts, return to Maramal to arrange the ceremony. Follow the resulting marriage quest objective to the Temple of Mara in Riften, then confirm your commitment during the ceremony.

Skyrim’s Amulet of Mara is not the Pledge of Mara
In Skyrim’s single-player marriage process, the Amulet of Mara is worn to access marriage dialogue with eligible NPCs, and Maramal arranges the wedding. Bethesda Support’s Pledge of Mara instructions concern a separate multiplayer ritual: a player equips that item and uses it at a Shrine of Mara to invite another player. That multiplayer ritual is not the Skyrim NPC marriage ceremony.
