To move your spouse in Skyrim, speak with them and choose the option to move to another home, then select a destination the game offers. Before moving a household with adopted children, check that the home has suitable children’s beds and room arrangements. The exact dialogue wording and edge cases can vary, so treat the choices available in your game as the guide.
How to move your spouse
- Check the destination. Make sure you own the home and that it appears as an option when you speak with your spouse. The game does not provide a reliable, complete list of every home every spouse can move to.
- Talk to your spouse. Choose the dialogue option about moving to another home, then select the destination you want. The reported wording varies, so look for the move-home choice rather than expecting one exact line.
- Check children’s accommodation first. If adopted children are part of the household, make sure the destination has suitable beds and room arrangements for them before you start the move.
- Give the move time to take effect. Travel to the selected home and check whether your spouse has arrived. Hearthfire-related moves have been reported to behave inconsistently, so arrival may not be immediate.
Which homes can you choose?
Hearthfire adds three buildable homesteads: Lakeview Manor, Windstad Manor, and Heljarchen Hall. Previously purchased homes may also be adapted with children’s bedrooms. These are possible destinations to check, not a guarantee that every spouse will be offered every home; use the choices shown in your spouse’s dialogue.

Why is there no dialogue option to move my spouse?
If the move option is missing, first confirm that you own the destination and that it is one the game offers. If you have adopted children, check the target home’s children’s bedroom and beds. My spouse won’t move: what should I check?
- If your spouse is following you, dismiss them and check the conversation again. This is a player-suggested troubleshooting step, not a confirmed fix for every case. Player discussion about a spouse who would not move

These reports span different years and do not establish platform-specific behavior or a definitive fix. Avoid assuming that a workaround reported by one player applies to every game or mod setup.
