To romance Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3, build her approval and begin a private romance in Act One—either accept her wine invitation at the Tiefling celebration or, with high approval, ask to connect privately earlier. Do this before entering the Shadowfell: the community-maintained camp-event guide says that point is too late to initiate the route. Then let her story unfold at its own pace, take the Nightsong decision knowing it changes the relationship’s direction, and use long rests to give queued camp scenes a chance to trigger.
Spoilers ahead: The sections below discuss the Shadowfell, the House of Grief, and Shadowheart’s parents.
Act One: Build approval and start the romance
Shadowheart values space around her past. BG3Guides’ fan-made walkthrough recommends respecting her privacy rather than pressing her to explain her history early. It also identifies kindness to animals, selected pragmatic choices, and opposing Sharran cruelty as helpful approval patterns. Its examples include saving Arabella from Kagha and petting Scratch at camp. These are guide-reported suggestions, not a guarantee that any single choice will trigger a scene. Start before the Shadowfell
There are two reported ways to begin. At the Tiefling celebration, accept Shadowheart’s wine invitation; the guide recommends the response “I’d like that,” followed by the romantic dialogue at the cliffside and a kiss. Alternatively, the community-maintained Act One camp-event reference says that a private connection can be requested earlier at high approval. It also notes that the celebration option is available at medium approval. The party is therefore not your only opening—but entering the Shadowfell closes the initiation window described by that reference. See the Act One camp-event conditions.

The camp-event reference also says that dating another companion can cancel the event, and lists Wilderness long-rest conditions. If the invitation or private scene does not appear, take long rests and allow camp events to play rather than assuming approval alone will force the scene.
Act Two: Choose the direction of Shadowheart’s story
At the Shadowfell, Shadowheart’s decision about the Nightsong determines which version of her personal arc follows. According to BG3Guides, sparing the Nightsong leads toward the Selûnite path; killing her makes Shadowheart a Dark Justiciar. The guide reports that the romance can continue on the Dark Justiciar route, but becomes darker and more distant, and that this path closes her parents’ questline. Its description of the spared-Nightsong romance as “warmer” is an interpretation of the story’s tone, not a separate romance requirement.

The scene conditions and branch distinction are also reflected in the community-maintained Act Three camp-event reference. Choose according to the character arc you want to pursue; neither route should be mistaken for a universal romance fail-state.
Act Three: Meet the scene requirements
The Selûnite swimming scene
The well-known swimming scene is not automatic. The community-maintained Act Three camp-event reference lists these checks: an established romance, having been partnered with Shadowheart in Act Two, sparing the Nightsong, at least 40 approval, and having learned that she cannot swim. The scene invites you to join her as she learns. Nudity settings affect how the scene is presented, not the route’s listed prerequisites. Check the event reference for the complete community-maintained conditions.

Dark Justiciar romance content
The swimming scene is not the only Act Three romance event. The event reference also records Sharran-route content, including a scene in which Dark Justiciar Shadowheart puts Shar before the relationship. The content differs by branch, so not seeing the swimming scene is not by itself proof that the romance has ended.

This is an emotionally consequential, spoiler-heavy choice, not a romance pass-or-fail test. BG3Guides reports that saving Shadowheart’s parents leaves them alive under Shar’s curse. Allowing them to die frees them from that torment, at an emotional cost to Shadowheart. The guide says either outcome can continue the romance. Consider the consequence you want for Shadowheart and her family rather than treating one answer as mechanically required.
If a romance scene does not trigger
- Take long rests. BG3Guides recommends resting regularly because camp scenes can queue. A later event may need earlier camp content to play first.
- Check timing and branch. If you have not started the romance, the Act One event reference says entering the Shadowfell is too late to initiate it. If you are on the Dark Justiciar path, the Selûnite swimming scene’s listed conditions will not be met.
- Account for patch history. Larian’s August 25, 2023 Patch 1 announcement says it fixed cases where the conclusion to Shadowheart’s romance scene failed to trigger and made it easier for her to follow up on proposed Act Three romance moments. Larian’s Patch 6 notes include further romance-flow fixes and multiplayer trigger handling. Those fixes establish that trigger issues have existed; they do not guarantee that every current save or modded setup is free of problems.
Why the romance feels like part of Shadowheart’s story
Larian described its approach to relationships in Community Update #21: “In Baldur’s Gate 3, we wanted romantic relationships to possess the same complexity and depth as any other part of our narrative.” Shadowheart’s route reflects that aim through its links to privacy, faith, and her personal choices, rather than through approval alone. The detailed route steps above come from fan-maintained guides and event references; Larian’s statement explains design intent, not specific romance triggers.
