Choose the right multiplayer mode
For Stardew Valley, the relevant route for friends playing online is the game’s co-op mode. The host starts or loads a co-op farm, and friends join that hosted game. The host must stay in-game while everyone plays.

Steam Remote Play Together serves a different purpose: Steam describes it as a way to invite friends to supported local multiplayer games through the Steam friends list. It streams local play from the host rather than turning a game without online co-op into a native online multiplayer game. Check whether your chosen game supports Remote Play Together before relying on it; the feature and player rules are not universal.
Host a Stardew Valley co-op farm and invite friends
- Start or load a co-op farm. Use the game’s co-op flow to create a new farm or load a farm set up for multiplayer.
- Have friends check the co-op join screen. In the Stardew Valley Wiki’s instructions, multiplayer farms hosted by Steam friends can appear there.
- Send an invite if the farm is not listed. The Wiki says to try sending a Steam invite through the game’s Options tab in the game menu.
- Keep the host in the session. Friends play in the host’s farm, so the host must remain in-game for the group session.
These are Stardew Valley-specific instructions, not universal Steam menu steps. Consult the current multiplayer guide for another life-sim.

How many people can play?
Stardew Valley supports four players total in the cited co-op setup, with the host counted as one of the four. The developer’s 2019 announcement explicitly clarifies that the host is included; it does not mean four guests plus a host.
If a friend cannot join
- Check game versions. Stardew Valley’s official troubleshooting guide says all players must be on the same game version to play multiplayer together.
- Check account access. The guide says invite or invite-code controls may be unavailable if the game could not access the player’s Steam or GOG account.
- Use the game’s own troubleshooting instructions. Platform, account, and network requirements vary by game, so do not assume Stardew Valley’s checks apply to another title.
Can you mix remote and split-screen players?
Stardew Valley allows a host who started through Co-op to combine remote players with split-screen participants, subject to the game’s restrictions. Its guide also documents split-screen play for up to four players. That does not establish that every life-sim supports mixed local and remote play; check the target game’s current guide and platform details.

Native online co-op versus Remote Play Together
