Check the exact game’s Steam Store page and compare its System Requirements with your PC’s operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware, and available storage. There is no single hardware threshold for every open-world RPG: requirements vary by title, and meeting them does not guarantee a particular frame rate or graphics quality.
Find the game’s current requirements on Steam
- Open the Steam Store page for the exact game you want to play.
- Find the System Requirements section. Steam lists each game’s requirements on its Store page: Steam Support: Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Software.
- Note the listed minimum and recommended specifications, if both are provided. Requirements are specific to that title and can change as the game is updated.
Do not use a different game’s specifications as a proxy. Steam notes that updates can add features or improve visual fidelity in ways that affect older hardware.
Compare your PC with every listed category
On your PC, identify the operating system and version, processor, installed memory (RAM), graphics device, and available drive space. Compare each item with the corresponding requirement; strong performance in one component does not make up for an unsupported operating system or a shortfall in another.
- Operating system: Check that your OS is supported, including whether the listing calls for a 64-bit version. Steam advises checking both compatible operating systems and hardware requirements: Steam Support: Game is not available on your current platform.
- Processor: Compare the listed CPU requirement with your processor, paying attention to the model or generation specified.
- Memory: Compare installed RAM with the game’s requirement. Available memory can also be affected by other applications running at the same time.
- Graphics: Check the graphics device against the listed requirement. Do not assume that an integrated GPU is equivalent to a separate graphics card.
- Storage: Confirm that the required space is available on the drive where you plan to install the game.
Understand minimum and recommended specifications
Minimum and recommended are separate guidance, not interchangeable promises. If your PC meets only the minimum tier, that does not establish what frame rate, resolution, or settings you will get. Steam Support cautions: “Simply meeting the system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance.”

Recommended specifications also do not guarantee a specific result on every system. The listing alone does not promise performance at your preferred resolution or graphics settings; those expectations depend on the particular game and PC.
If your PC falls short or performance is poor
First confirm you are comparing the right game listing and that the PC’s specifications are identified correctly. If the machine meets the listed requirements but performance is disappointing, Steam identifies graphics settings, drivers, and background applications as factors to check. Close unnecessary apps, review the game’s settings, and check for current drivers. The Store page is not a performance benchmark.

If a specific shortfall remains, a hardware upgrade may help, but choose it based on the game’s requirements and your PC’s compatibility rather than assuming one upgrade fixes every bottleneck. Steam names graphics-card and memory upgrades as possible ways to improve performance; neither is a universal solution.
If the listing does not resolve a compatibility question, consult the game’s support information or Steam Community discussions. Requirements are title-specific, and Steam notes that updates can alter demands over time.
