It is a snapshot of how reviewers recommend a game—not a critic rating, a feature-by-feature verdict, or a promise that you will enjoy it. To judge whether that sentiment applies to you, compare the time window and language shown, then read reviews that explain their reasons.
What does the Steam review percentage measure?
Steam bases a game’s Review Score on the percentage of positive reviews. The label summarizes that proportion; it does not describe every part of the game or show how strongly each reviewer feels. Valve says the score is intended to help potential purchasers estimate whether they may be happy with a purchase. Steam Support’s user-review FAQ explains the score and how to use reviews.

Read the percentage and its accompanying label together as a quick recommendation signal. A high share of positive reviews does not tell you whether players praise the story, performance, accessibility, multiplayer, or something else; the written reviews provide that context.
How should you compare Recent and Overall reviews?
Recent and overall scores describe different periods. The recent score is intended to reflect newer reviews, while the overall score summarizes the longer review history. A gap between them is a reason to investigate, not proof of what changed.

Valve’s description says the recent score uses reviews posted in the preceding 30 days, when there are enough reviews, and that the game must have been available on Steam for at least 45 days. These are eligibility conditions, so a recent score may not appear for every title. Valve’s explanation of recent review scores dates to 2016; the current page’s labels and presentation may evolve.
- If Recent is notably lower, read recent negative reviews and check whether they mention a game update, technical problems, or another concern.
- If Recent is notably higher, look for what newer players say improved or changed, and whether those changes matter to you.
- When comparing two games, compare the same period—Recent with Recent or Overall with Overall.
Why can Steam show different scores by language?
For some games, the score shown can depend on the viewer’s primary language. In its August 18, 2025 announcement, Valve said language-specific scores apply when a game has more than 2,000 publicly visible reviews overall and at least 200 reviews in a language. Valve also said an overall score requires 10 reviews. These thresholds describe the announced system; eligibility and display depend on the title and Steam’s interface. On an eligible game page, use See language breakdown to compare language groups or switch to the overall score. If two people report different percentages for the same game, check whether they are viewing the same language score and time period before treating the difference as a contradiction.
How do you read individual Steam reviews?
Open reviews that seem relevant to the way you plan to play. Steam shows reviewers’ playtime and offers controls to browse and rate reviews; its page also prioritizes helpful reviews written in the browsing user’s language. A helpful ranking is a way to find examples, not a guarantee that a review matches your priorities.

- Look for the specific reason behind the recommendation: a review that describes a problem is more useful than one that only states a verdict.
- Check whether the reviewer discusses the part of the game you care about, such as solo play, online matchmaking, controls, or performance.
- Use the listed playtime as context for the author’s experience, not as proof that their judgment is representative.
- Read both positive and negative examples, especially when the overall percentage is close to a category boundary or recent sentiment differs.
How can you investigate a sudden score drop?
A sharp change in a short period calls for context. Valve defines review bombing as a large number of reviews posted in a compressed time frame with the aim of lowering a game’s Review Score. That describes a pattern, but a sudden drop alone does not establish that review bombing occurred or explain reviewers’ motives.
Steam’s review-page histogram shows the positive-to-negative ratio over a product’s lifetime and lets readers open reviews from a selected period. Inspect the reviews around the change and note the reasons authors give. Valve has also noted that review-bomb disputes can concern matters outside the game itself, so distinguish criticism of the game experience from objections to an external event or decision. A practical way to decide whether the score matters to you
- Identify the score shown. Note its label, percentage, and whether it is Recent or Overall.
- Check the language context. If language scores are available, inspect See language breakdown or compare with the overall score.
- Check the volume and time pattern. A percentage summarizes reviews, while the histogram and time-specific samples can reveal when sentiment shifted.
- Read examples for reasons. Focus on issues that affect your intended play and weigh the authors’ accounts against your own priorities.
