Publishers can revise schedules, and retailers may display dates based on information supplied by publishers or manufacturers. If you preorder, the seller’s rules determine when you’re charged, whether a date change triggers a notice, and whether you can cancel or get a refund. Check the official announcement and the exact store where you placed the order before relying on a date or refund.
Why can a game’s release date change?
A listing date can change because it is based on information that may later be revised. PlayStation Direct, for example, says its preorder release dates come from publishers or manufacturers and “could be subject to change.” That explains why a displayed date can move; it does not establish why any particular game was delayed. For a specific title, look for the publisher or developer’s announcement rather than assuming a cause.

Delays have also been common in at least one historical dataset, but the figure should not be read as a forecast for a game you are considering. A 2022 study of 23,485 Steam games reported delay percentages from 48% to 52% across the genres it examined. It covers that dataset—not all platforms, today’s release slate, or the odds that an individual upcoming game will slip. Read the study, An Empirical Study of Delayed Games on Steam.
What happens to a preorder when the date moves?
There is no single rule for all sellers. A delay does not, by itself, tell you whether your order is canceled, whether payment timing changes, or whether you qualify for a refund. The answer depends on the seller, your region, the edition, and whether the game has begun downloading or playing.

PlayStation Direct: date-change emails for its orders
PlayStation Direct’s US support FAQ says it will notify customers by email if the scheduled date changes or an ordered item is canceled. This is a statement about orders placed through PlayStation Direct; do not assume another retailer or storefront provides the same notice. See PlayStation Direct’s preorder FAQ.
PlayStation Store: download status can affect refunds
Under Sony’s cited US PlayStation Store cancellation policy, preorder refund eligibility depends on timing and whether the main content has started downloading or streaming. Automatic downloads may occur if enabled, so check that setting as well as the current policy before a date change or cancellation decision. The cited terms are for the US; regional rules may differ. Read Sony’s US cancellation policy.

Steam: preorder refunds and the post-release window
Steam says a preorder can be refunded before release. After release, its cited refund FAQ describes a request window of two weeks from release and less than two hours of playtime. If you bought the game more than six months before release, a refund to the original payment method may not be possible, though Steam Wallet credit may still be available. Check Steam’s current terms for your order before relying on these conditions. Read Steam’s preorder refund FAQ.
Nintendo eShop: charge timing and preload
Nintendo of America says an eShop preorder is charged no sooner than seven days before release. Once payment processing begins, the game preloads; an update at release is needed to play. If a date moves near the charge window, check the order and Nintendo’s current North American FAQ for cancellation details. This timing and guidance are specific to Nintendo of America’s FAQ, not a universal Nintendo policy. Read Nintendo’s North American preorder and preload FAQ.

How to reduce preorder surprises
- Identify the seller of record. Check whether you ordered from the publisher, a console or PC storefront, or a retail shop. The terms and notices for one seller do not automatically apply to another.
- Verify the date in two places. Check the game’s official announcement and the listing attached to your order. A retailer’s displayed date can be based on publisher or manufacturer information and may change.
- Save the confirmation and monitor the right account. Keep the order email and check the email address or account associated with that seller. Only rely on a notice promise if that seller states it.
- Read the current regional cancellation terms before paying. Note when payment is taken, the cancellation deadline and conditions, and whether preload, automatic download, streaming, or playtime affects eligibility.
- Recheck after an announcement. Confirm the updated date in your order record and revisit the seller’s policy. Do not assume the change automatically cancels the order, creates a new opt-in, or gives physical and digital editions the same date.
Check what “early access” means on the listing
On Steam, “Advance Access” is an early-play benefit offered with eligible preorder editions; Steam distinguishes it from “Early Access,” its development model for games released before they are finished. Read the edition details and identify which date the store labels as the official release. An early-play period is not necessarily the full release date. See Steam’s Advance Access explanation.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

- Who controls the order and sends delay or cancellation notices?
- When is payment taken, and could a revised date affect that timing?
- What is the last point to cancel, and what conditions apply to a refund?
- Can a download, preload, stream, or early-play period change refund eligibility?
- Does the policy match your region and the edition you are buying?
- Is the date for the full release, a physical shipment, or an edition with an early-play window?
Store policies can change, and consumer rights vary by region. Treat the seller’s current terms and the publisher’s official update as the practical sources for your particular order.
