For racing games on Xbox Series X, set the console to the highest resolution and refresh-rate combination your display supports, configure HDR with the Xbox calibration tool, and enable VRR or ALLM only if your TV or monitor supports them. These settings control the console’s display output; they do not make a game render at a particular frame rate. Choose a racing game’s own quality or performance mode separately.
Check which display modes your TV or monitor supports
Start on the console at Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details. Xbox says this screen reports whether the connected display supports 4K and HDR. The combinations available can depend on both the display and the HDMI port you use: some displays support 120 Hz only at certain resolutions or on selected inputs. Check the display’s manual or specifications for the capabilities of that exact port. Xbox’s display-resolution guidance explains how to check display capabilities.
Choose the highest supported output that suits your priorities. If your display supports 4K at 120 Hz on the connected port, you can select that output in TV & Display Options. If it does not, use a supported combination rather than assuming a “4K 120Hz” label guarantees both features together.
Understand console output versus a game’s frame rate
Xbox Series X supports output up to 120 Hz, but that is a console and display capability—not a promise that every racing game renders at 120 frames per second. The game must support the relevant performance mode, and its actual resolution, frame rate, and visual settings are determined by that title.

When a racing game offers graphics modes, compare the game’s own stated resolution, target or locked frame rate, visual detail, and compatibility with your preferred display output. Check current official information for that specific game; the console’s refresh-rate setting alone cannot establish those details.
Connect through the right HDMI port
Some TVs reserve advanced features for particular HDMI inputs. Connect the Series X to a port that supports the resolution, refresh rate, HDR, or variable refresh features you intend to use, and enable any required enhanced-input setting in the TV’s menu. The exact name and location of that setting vary by display model.

Xbox says an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is included with Series X and recommends using it for HDMI 2.1 benefits. Use the included cable if it suits your setup; a replacement is only relevant if you cannot use it or your current connection is not working as expected. Xbox’s HDMI connection guidance covers connecting the console to a display.
Set up HDR for racing games
HDR requires support from the display and the HDMI input connected to the console. Confirm that the TV or monitor supports HDR10, then enable its HDR or enhanced HDMI input mode if the manufacturer requires it. After that, run the Xbox calibration tool at Settings > General > TV & Display Options > Setup > Calibrate HDR for Games.

Follow the on-screen steps and the display maker’s instructions. There is no universal brightness or calibration number that works across all panels, so use the tool rather than copying settings intended for a different TV. Xbox’s HDR and calibration guidance describes the console-side setup.
Use VRR and ALLM when the display supports them
Xbox Series X supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), but the connected display must support each feature. Check the TV or monitor specifications and the exact HDMI port, then enable the feature in the display menu if needed. Xbox’s official overview states: “Xbox Series X|S support up to 120 Hz refresh rate, plus Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), which are new in the world of 4K TVs.” Xbox Wire’s display-features overview explains these capabilities.

VRR can help a compatible display respond to changes in a game’s output; it does not turn a game into a higher-frame-rate mode. ALLM lets supported equipment switch to a low-latency mode. Availability and behavior depend on the connected display and its settings.

- Check Xbox’s report: Open Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details and review the capabilities reported for the current connection.
- Verify the display input: Confirm in the display manual that the HDMI port in use supports the feature and resolution combination you want. Turn on any enhanced HDMI, HDR, or gaming setting required for that input.
- Use automatic detection: In TV & Display Options, use the console’s automatic display detection setting if available. Xbox recommends Auto-detect when investigating display options that are missing.
- Isolate the connection: Connect the console directly to the TV or monitor while troubleshooting, bypassing a receiver, switch, or capture device that could affect the signal. Check for display firmware updates as well.
- Respond to visual corruption by symptom: If VRR is associated with visual corruption, Xbox advises turning VRR off. Xbox also suggests trying a 60 Hz refresh rate for a specific troubleshooting scenario; that is not a universal recommendation for racing games.
Menu labels and display firmware can change, so follow the options shown on your console and consult the manual for your display model. Xbox’s display troubleshooting guidance includes connection and setting checks.
