Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says the company remains committed to gaming, but his remarks do not promise a specific Xbox console, game slate, spending level, or exclusivity policy. The reassurance came as Microsoft announced a major leadership transition in its gaming business.
What Nadella said about Microsoft’s gaming commitment
In Microsoft’s February 20, 2026 announcement, Nadella said: “I am long on gaming and its role at the center of our consumer ambition.” He made the statement while announcing Asha Sharma’s appointment as Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft Gaming, reporting to him. Microsoft’s announcement presents gaming as an important part of the company’s consumer strategy.
Windows Central later reported that Nadella repeated the message during an internal Q&A with Sharma: “For me, we’re long on gaming. We’ll continue to invest, and we’ll always do so.” Windows Central said it verified the Q&A transcript with multiple sources; Microsoft did not publish the full transcript in the sources cited here. The reported Q&A is therefore distinct from Nadella’s public February statement.
What changed in Xbox leadership
Microsoft’s February announcement said Phil Spencer had decided to retire and Sarah Bond had decided to leave the company. Sharma would lead Microsoft Gaming, while Matt Booty would become Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, reporting to Sharma. Microsoft said Spencer would assist Sharma with a smooth transition. The original announcement used the title “Microsoft Gaming”; an editor’s note on the same page says that, as of April 23, 2026, the organization is known as XBOX and Sharma’s title is CEO XBOX.

Microsoft described the organization as spanning nearly 40 studios across Xbox, Bethesda, Activision Blizzard, and King, with franchises including Halo, The Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Diablo, Candy Crush, and Fallout. It also said the business reaches more than 500 million monthly active users and called itself the top publisher across all platforms. Those scale and ranking claims are Microsoft’s own descriptions in its announcement, not independent measurements cited here.
Does this mean Microsoft is shutting down Xbox?
The cited statements do not announce a shutdown of Xbox. In the reported Q&A, Nadella addressed the need to sustain relationships with existing players, saying: “We have to make sure that the friends we have today, are the friends that you have tomorrow.” He referred to console and PC players as well as fans of Forza and Halo, and said the goal was for players to continue loving the company for what they expect it to do. Windows Central’s account also describes the discussion as considering how Microsoft might extend gaming beyond console, not as an announcement that it would abandon console play.

What the promise does—and does not—tell players
“We’ll continue to invest” is a statement of intent, not a published budget or a commitment to a particular level of spending. Neither the public announcement nor the reported Q&A gives a dollar figure, allocation by product, or timeframe for specific initiatives.
- It does indicate: Nadella says gaming remains part of Microsoft’s consumer ambition and that the company intends to keep investing.
- It does not establish: a named hardware commitment, a guaranteed release schedule, or a policy on console exclusives.
- It does not settle: how Microsoft will balance console, PC, and other ways of reaching players.
In the reported Q&A, Nadella also expected the team to deliver through execution and creativity. That is strategic reassurance amid a leadership change, rather than a detailed roadmap for what players will receive next.

Did Nadella say Asha Sharma has a “blank check”?
No. Microsoft communications chief Frank Shaw disputed the circulating “blank check” wording. Windows Central reproduced Shaw’s response saying that the claim—“Asha Sharma has my full trust and has A BLANK CHECK to revive Xbox and the trust of the fans, no matter the cost.”—“was not said.” Windows Central’s correction report and GameSpot’s coverage report the denial. The phrase should not be presented as Nadella’s statement.
