SteamVR Chaperone vs. Meta Quest Boundary (Guardian): Features Compared

SteamVR Chaperone and Meta Quest Boundary both warn near a configured play-area edge, but differ in setup and visual cues—and neither detects every room hazard.

SteamVR Chaperone and Meta Quest Boundary both show cues when you approach the edge of a configured VR play area. Steam uses a grid by default; Quest can show a translucent boundary and fade in passthrough. Neither feature detects every hazard in a room or guarantees that you will avoid a collision. Meta’s current documentation calls the system Boundary; many users and older Meta materials call it Guardian.

What each boundary system does

Steam Support describes Chaperone as technology that indicates the boundaries you designate for your play area. Meta’s Boundary documentation describes cues that appear as the headset or controllers approach the configured play-area edge.

Both features are boundary visualizations: they prompt you when you near the limits of a prepared space. They should not be treated as systems that map everything in the room or identify hazards wherever they are.

How setup and play-area shape differ

SteamVR Chaperone

During SteamVR setup, you use controllers to designate the play area. Steam’s end-user FAQ says the area is user-designated but does not specify its geometry in comparable detail. It also discusses configurable Chaperone settings, without giving a matching Stationary or Roomscale mode description or a minimum area size.

Meta Quest Boundary

Quest offers Stationary for compact seated or standing use and Roomscale for movement in a drawn space, according to Meta’s design guidance. In the documented Roomscale flow, you trace an outer boundary; the system then calculates an axis-aligned rectangular play area inside it. Meta recommends a Roomscale area of at least 6.5 by 6.5 feet (2 by 2 meters), or larger. That is Meta’s recommendation for its Quest guidance, not a universal minimum or a SteamVR requirement.

What the warnings look like

Feature SteamVR Chaperone Meta Quest Boundary
Default or documented visual cue Steam says the default display is a grid that appears near the boundary. Meta documents a translucent mesh grid or wall and floor markers near the play-area edge.
View of the room The cited Steam FAQ describes the grid; it does not describe a passthrough cue. Passthrough can fade in near the boundary to show the real-world surroundings.
Configuration detail Chaperone settings can be customized; the FAQ does not enumerate all available options. Meta describes Boundary cues and play-area setup; available behavior may depend on system and app context.

These documented differences describe presentation, not comparative effectiveness. The sources do not establish that either boundary is more accurate, customizable in every respect, or safer overall.

What the systems do not protect you from

Chaperone is not room scanning

Steam explicitly cautions that Chaperone only indicates the boundaries you designate. It does not show objects such as a table or pet, the floor or ceiling, or overhead obstacles. Steam also warns that if you move quickly, the boundary may not appear soon enough. Its FAQ recommends removing objects from the floor, noting overhead projections, and not treating the feature as a substitute for planning a safe area or using a spotter.

Passthrough is not a hazard guarantee

Quest Boundary describes the edge of the configured play area; it does not establish that all objects within that area are detected. Passthrough may help you see the surroundings when it fades in, but it is not a guarantee that hazards will be recognized or avoided. Meta’s health and safety guidance advises clearing the activity space. Boundaryless use can leave clutter or obstacles unmarked and removes the boundary warning when you leave the room.

Developer integration on Quest

Meta’s native/PC Guardian system documentation describes APIs that can query boundary geometry and proximity or status. The operating system may keep a triggered boundary visible even if an app requests that it be hidden. The cited Steam end-user FAQ does not detail an app-facing Chaperone boundary API, so it does not support a like-for-like comparison of developer access.

Which description fits your setup?

  • SteamVR: Think of Chaperone as a configurable warning visualization for the play area you mark, with a grid as the default cue.
  • Quest: Think of Boundary as a system that can provide edge cues around a configured Stationary or Roomscale space, with passthrough potentially fading in near the edge.
  • Either system: Clear the area first and account for objects, furniture, pets, walls, and overhead hazards yourself. A boundary cue is a reminder about the play-area edge, not a complete safety system.
