Dark Souls turns 15 in North America on October 4, 2026—the anniversary of its North American release. It did not launch worldwide on that date: the original PlayStation 3 release arrived in Japan in September 2011, and Europe followed on October 7.

When did Dark Souls come out?

There is no single worldwide launch date. FromSoftware’s company history records the first release on PlayStation 3 in Japan in September 2011, while Namco Bandai’s North American announcement gives October 4, 2011 for the North American launch and October 7, 2011 for Europe. That makes October 4, 2026 the North American 15th anniversary, not the anniversary of the game’s first release everywhere.

FromSoftware later recorded more than 1.5 million worldwide cumulative shipments by November 2011. That is a publisher-reported shipments milestone, not an independently verified sell-through total; no newer sales figure is established here.

What made Dark Souls distinctive?

FromSoftware developed Dark Souls as an action role-playing game. Bandai Namco described it as a spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls, not a direct sequel. Its defining loop brought together dangerous exploration, difficult enemy encounters, discovery, and the satisfaction of overcoming challenges.

The original game paired bonfires—checkpoints that gave exploration a rhythm of risk and recovery—with online features that connected players indirectly and directly. Players could leave messages, summon help for co-op, or be invaded by another player. The design made the world feel shared while keeping its dangers central.

FromSoftware’s official series description says its games pursue “a high sense of accomplishment” through “tense dungeon exploration,” fearsome enemies, and the joy of discovery. That is a corporate description of the series rather than a quote attributed to a named individual, but it captures why the game’s appeal is more than simply difficulty.

Which version should you play now?

For a replay of the first game, Dark Souls: Remastered is the direct choice. Bandai Namco lists it for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch, and says it includes the main game plus the Artorias of the Abyss DLC. The publisher’s European product page dates the PS4, PC, and Xbox One release to May 25, 2018, and the Switch release to October 19, 2018. Check the store or retailer serving your region for current platform availability and editions.

If you want the whole trilogy rather than only the original, Bandai Namco describes the Dark Souls Trilogy as a three-disc collection for PS4 and Xbox One. It includes the remastered first game, Dark Souls II, and Dark Souls III with their associated DLC. The Trilogy is a broader series collection, not a different edition of the original game alone.
