You can adjust how the boundary appears in VR; if the virtual floor is too high or low, rerun Room Setup or use SteamVR’s quick calibration option. Chaperone is only a boundary indicator: it does not detect obstacles and may not warn you in time during sudden movement, so keep the play area clear.
What SteamVR Chaperone does
Steam Support defines Chaperone as technology that indicates the boundaries of your play area. You establish those bounds during setup by designating the space with your controllers; by default, a grid appears as you approach the configured boundary. With the headset on and SteamVR running, press the controller’s System button to access settings in VR. Steam’s Chaperone FAQ does not specify a universal list of controls or exact menu labels for every headset and software version.
How to change boundary visibility
If you want a more noticeable boundary or a different visual experience, open SteamVR settings in VR and look for the available Chaperone or boundary options on your setup. Steam says the default provides its most visible boundary and allows customization, but does not name every setting in its FAQ. The controls and labels you see can vary; do not assume that a control documented for an older interface exists in every current installation.
For comparison, the third-party OpenVR Advanced Settings project documentation describes controls including Visibility, which adjusts boundary visibility, and Fade Distance, which changes the distance at which bounds appear. It also documents options such as Height, Center Marker, Play Space Marker, Force Bounds, and proximity warnings. These are utility controls, not a guaranteed inventory of built-in SteamVR settings. Check the project documentation and compatibility for the version you use.
#1 Best Overall
- 100% brand new and high quality.
- Compatible with Meta Quest 3.
- Special features: no soldering necessary
- Each item has been checked and in good condition before shipping.
- If you have any question, please contact us. We will offer an excellent after-sell service.
An older Steam-hosted OVR Advanced Settings guide shows a Chaperone page with visibility, fade distance, markers, force and disable options, proximity warnings, profiles, and orientation. It documents that guide’s interface at the time, not a current, cross-headset SteamVR menu.
Fix a virtual floor that is too high or low
Steam Support says floor position is measured during Room Setup and can change suddenly if base stations are moved. To correct the floor, use the full setup or SteamVR’s quick calibration path:
- Launch SteamVR and select SteamVR > Run Room Setup.
- At the floor-calibration stage, place the controllers on the floor with their triggers facing the ceiling. Steam recommends this placement to help prevent wobbling.
- If the floor is particularly reflective, place a flat, non-reflective object under each controller.
- Alternatively, use Settings > Developer > Room and Tracking for quick calibration.
- If SteamVR reports pending firmware updates for your devices, install them and let the update finish without unplugging or interrupting the device.
These steps come from Steam’s floor-position troubleshooting page. Menu wording or availability may differ by software version.
Rank #2
- This depth camera sensor replacement for Quest 3 virtual reality headsets.
- Model 844-01205-03
- Replaces the faulty Depth camera sensor to restore proper headset tracking. Addresses common sensor-related problems on Quest 3.
When the bounds or virtual position seem wrong
A visibility adjustment changes how the boundary is presented; it does not repair room geometry or tracking. If the play-area orientation or virtual floor/front position is wrong, Steam’s troubleshooting index recommends rerunning Room Setup. It says orientation and other features can also be changed through advanced features in room setup. If your reported virtual position differs from your physical position, Steam says tracking problems are a usual cause, so investigate tracking rather than relying on a visibility setting.

Chaperone marks designated bounds; it does not scan the room. It cannot show a table, pet, floor-level object, ceiling, or overhead hazard, and Steam warns that it may not appear soon enough if you run or lunge suddenly. Steam says Chaperone is not a substitute for planning a safe play area or having a spotter. Clear the space before playing and leave room for outstretched arms and controllers to avoid walls, ceilings, and nearby objects. Valve’s Index setup guide notes that standing-only and seated setups need less space than room-scale, but the captured guidance gives no numeric minimum.
Steam’s legacy Vive-era room-scale FAQ gives a minimum of 2 meters by 1.5 meters of free space (6.5 ft by 5 ft). Treat that as guidance for the Vive context in which it was published, not a universal current requirement for all headsets or play modes; check the documentation for your device.
