In the original PC version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, activate a locked door or container, lift a tumbler with your lockpick, and press Spacebar or left-click when it reaches its set point. Set every tumbler to open the lock. Mistime a press and the pick can break; already-set tumblers may fall, too.
How to lockpick in the original PC version
- Activate the locked door or container to open the lockpicking interface.
- Use the pick to raise a tumbler toward its set point at the top.
- When the tumbler reaches the set point, press Spacebar or left-click to try to lodge it in place.
- Repeat for each tumbler. The lock opens when all required tumblers are set.
Timing matters: a mistimed attempt can snap the tumbler back and break your pick. It may also drop tumblers you had already set, costing both a pick and progress. These controls describe the original PC game, not a confirmed universal sequence for every version.
How lock difficulty and Security affect picking
The original PC manual ties lock difficulty to the number of tumblers:

The manual says higher Security makes it easier to lodge a tumbler at its set point. At higher mastery, fewer tumblers fall after a mistake. Bethesda Support also says lockpicking improves automatically as your character levels, while chests in higher-level areas become harder. Failed pin attempts have a small chance to break a lockpick, and that chance increases with lock quality; Bethesda does not state a numeric break rate. Manual picking or Auto Attempt?

Choose manual picking when you want direct timing and control. Choose Auto Attempt when you would rather let the game calculate the outcome. The PC manual describes both methods and their risks.
When a lock cannot be picked
A lock labeled “Lock Requires a Key” is a key-only lock: lockpicks cannot open it, so find and use its key. Some chests do not require lockpicks, though most locked chests do. Bethesda Support.

Oblivion Remastered and platform controls
Bethesda’s official Oblivion Remastered page lists PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2, with Standard and Deluxe editions. Bethesda’s support material confirms that Security governs lockpicking and trap disarming in Remastered, but the available official guidance does not establish that the original PC minigame steps or controls are identical on every Remastered platform. Treat the Spacebar and left-click directions above as original-PC instructions rather than assuming they apply to a controller or another edition.
