The first buying decision is usually which edition your friends use: Java Edition plays with Java players on PC, while Bedrock Edition connects supported Bedrock devices. The two editions do not cross-play with each other.
What is Minecraft?
In Minecraft, players break and place blocks to shape a world, collect materials, make items, and build structures. You can play alone or with other people. There is no required campaign or official ending: the Minecraft “What is Minecraft?” overview describes it as a sandbox game with no official end.

The game’s open structure means players can set their own goals, from constructing a home to exploring and surviving. Its two central modes offer different starting points.
Creative mode
Creative mode is geared toward building. Players have broad access to resources and can fly, so gathering materials and dealing with survival needs are not the focus.

What age is Minecraft for, and is it violent?
Minecraft’s parents’ guide lists PEGI 7 and ESRB Everyone 10+ as recommended age ratings. These are regional classifications, not a guarantee that the game will suit every child or family. Survival includes hostile encounters, so parents considering violence should look at the game’s combat as well as its rating and the child’s individual sensitivities.
Whether a child plays alone or online also changes the experience. Single-player can be played offline; multiplayer adds interaction with other people, so account settings and the child’s play group are relevant parts of a family decision.

What platforms is Minecraft available on?
Edition availability determines which devices can play together. Java Edition is for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Bedrock Edition is available on supported Windows PCs, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices. Availability and compatibility can depend on the specific device, so check the current Minecraft device and edition information before buying.
On PC, Minecraft currently presents Java & Bedrock as a bundle. On other devices, check the store listing to confirm which edition is offered. A console’s local split-screen supports up to four players, according to Minecraft’s current overview; online console play may also require that platform’s own online-service subscription.
Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
No. Java and Bedrock use different multiplayer servers, so someone playing Java cannot join a Bedrock player’s game, or vice versa. “Cross-play” applies within an edition’s supported group, not between the two editions.

Before choosing, ask what edition your friends use, which devices everyone owns, and whether you want couch co-op, Marketplace content, mods, or third-party servers. On console, also check whether your online play requires a separate platform subscription. No edition is the right choice for every group.
Is Minecraft safe for kids to play online?
Single-player is an offline option. Online multiplayer adds community interaction, and Minecraft’s parents’ guide says multiplayer is off by default for child accounts. Parents can manage online games, chat, and purchases through Microsoft/Xbox family settings, although the precise setting path differs by device.
Minecraft documents player reporting and moderation, including chat filtering in Bedrock and Realms contexts. These are useful controls, not a guarantee against every unwanted interaction. Talk with a child about who they play with, review the relevant account and device settings together, and keep the game updated. Minecraft’s safety help page says versions earlier than Java 1.16.4 lack the newer safety features it describes.

What accessibility options does Minecraft have?
Minecraft’s accessibility page describes features across its games, including menu navigation and narration options, plus settings for how chat text is presented. It also lists adjustable audio channels in Bedrock and ore patterns designed to be easier to distinguish for players who have difficulty reading color differences.
Features vary by game and edition. On the device you plan to use, open the game’s Accessibility menu to check which options are available there.
Do you need to buy anything beyond the base game?
No additional purchase is needed for ordinary single-player play. Bedrock’s Marketplace offers optional content such as maps, skins, and add-ons. Realms are optional hosted worlds, not a prerequisite for playing solo. If you are buying on PC, Minecraft currently presents Java & Bedrock together; for other devices, verify the edition in that platform’s store.

For a physical tie-in rather than an in-game purchase, LEGO makes Minecraft building sets that recreate scenes and characters; its official page currently lists examples including The Mooshroom House and The Warden Encounter. Product listings and availability can vary by region and date.
How many copies has Minecraft sold?
In a June 1, 2026 announcement, Impact.com reported that Minecraft had sold over 300 million copies and called it the best-selling video game of all time. That is a company-reported figure, not an independently audited figure established here.
