Where to find the Padlock key
- Go to the sluice mechanism in Freya’s Garden. It controls three gates.
- Select and open the rightmost gate nearest Morkvarg’s cave. Walkthroughs also describe this as the northern gate; use its position relative to the cave if the compass direction is unclear. This is the gate that leads to the key cave, rather than the other routes into the garden. The Witcher Wiki walkthrough and GameBanshee’s walkthrough describe this route.
- Dive under the open gate and swim along the flooded passage into the cave beneath Morkvarg’s lair.
- Search the bones or skeleton remains in the cave to collect the Padlock key. The item reference also places it among bones in this cave. The Witcher Wiki’s Padlock key entry
- Swim back and use the key on the locked garden or chapter-house doors.
Which doors the key opens
The Padlock key is not an ordinary house key: it opens locked doors in the garden, including the chapter-house door. Walkthroughs also refer to the building as the house near the sacred tree, so “garden house” and “chapter house” point to the same relevant location in this quest. You do not need to find a separate key for each of these doors. The item entry lists garden gates and the chapter-house door; the quest walkthrough describes the garden doors and rooms in the house near the sacred tree.
Why the other sluice gates are not the right route
The mechanism offers three different gate routes, not three interchangeable ways to reach the key. For the underwater cave, choose the rightmost gate nearest Morkvarg’s lair. The other gates lead to different parts of Freya’s Garden. Some garden areas can also be reached without operating the sluice mechanism, but that shortcut does not change where the Padlock key is found.
What to do in the chapter house
After unlocking the house, search both rooms. The quest walkthrough identifies Morkvarg’s journal in a chest in the left room; reading it provides a clue for the later conversation with Einar. The chapter house and journal are among the quest objectives listed in the quest walkthrough. This is additional quest information beyond the key route.
