Buy a PS5 now if you want to play current PS5 games and your existing console cannot meet that need. Wait if your current setup works and you are comfortable delaying a purchase without knowing when a successor will arrive. Consider PS5 Pro only if its supported-game improvements are worth the higher price on your display. Sony confirms it is investing in the next generation, but says decisions about its timing and pricing have not been made. There is no confirmed PS6 release window or price in the cited Sony materials.
What are your three real choices?
This is not a choice between a PS5 with known specifications and a PS6 with known specifications. Sony has not announced those successor details. The practical decision is whether to keep a console that still serves you, buy a current PS5 model for access to PS5 games now, or pay more for the PS5 Pro’s supported-game enhancements.
- Keep your current console if it works for the games you want to play. That avoids spending now while the successor’s timing is unknown.
- Buy a PS5 if you want current-generation games and your existing hardware does not meet that need. Choose the disc-capable or Digital Edition based on how you acquire and play games.
- Consider PS5 Pro if you already play PS5 games, have a display that can show its potential improvements, and care about the specific titles enhanced for Pro.
Sony’s investor-relations Q&A says the company has not made decisions about next-generation timing or pricing. What do the current PS5 models cost?
Sony’s US recommended retail prices, effective April 2, 2026, are listed below. They are suggested prices, not a guarantee of a retailer’s current price or product availability. Sony’s PlayStation Direct US listing showed prices of $649, $599, and $899 when accessed, illustrating why a store listing and a recommended retail price should not be treated as interchangeable. Check local retailers for current prices where you live.

Sony announced the price changes on March 27, 2026, citing global economic pressures. The prices above apply to the US; Sony’s announcement also lists UK prices of £569.99, £519.99, and £789.99, and European prices of €649.99, €599.99, and €899.99, respectively, for PS5, Digital Edition, and PS5 Pro. Its Japan prices are ¥97,980, ¥89,980, and ¥137,980. These are recommended prices in the named markets, not universal prices or assurances of local stock. Sony’s March 27, 2026 price announcement.
When is PS5 Pro worth considering?
PS5 Pro is a higher-priced performance option within the PS5 generation, not an announced successor. Sony highlights an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its AI-driven upscaling feature. Its current product material also lists a 2TB SSD and Wi-Fi 7 compatibility. Sony says compatible games can combine higher or more consistent frame rates with ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K, but it does not promise the same result in every game.

At launch, Sony said PS5 Pro had 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the then-current PS5, and could render up to 45% faster. Those are Sony’s manufacturer claims about the hardware comparison, not independent measurements of how every game performs. Sony’s present-day feature descriptions likewise carry a key qualification: Pro features are available only in select games enhanced for PS5 Pro, and enhancements vary by game. Check whether your own games are supported before paying for the upgrade.
- Pro is more compelling when you play supported titles, your screen can make the relevant visual or frame-rate differences useful to you, and the premium fits your budget.
- A standard PS5 may be the better fit if you mainly want access to PS5 games and do not need Pro-specific enhancements.
- Keeping a working PS5 may make more sense if the games you play already run acceptably and the Pro’s supported features do not justify replacing your console.

Do you need a disc drive?
Sony describes the standard US PS5 as disc-capable and the Digital Edition as all-digital. The right choice depends on whether you use physical games and want the option to play them. Sony’s US purchase page also states that, from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only; discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. - Start with the console you have. If it runs the games you want and you are satisfied, keeping it is a valid choice—not a bet on a known PS6 launch date.
- Decide whether you need PS5 games now. If so, compare the current PS5 models rather than waiting for unannounced successor hardware.
- Match the model to how you play. Choose a disc-capable console if physical games matter to you; choose Digital Edition if an all-digital library suits you.
- For Pro, check both your display and your games. Confirm that the titles you play have PS5 Pro enhancements and that the visual or performance features matter on your screen.
- Set a price you are comfortable paying. Use Sony’s dated recommended prices as a baseline, then check local retailer prices and availability before buying.
- Ask whether an unknown wait is acceptable. Sony’s cited materials leave next-generation timing and pricing undecided. Waiting means postponing the purchase for an unspecified period, not waiting for a confirmed short interval.
