The Dark Citadel is a cooperative endgame activity in Diablo IV’s Nahantu region, and it requires Vessel of Hatred access. Complete its one-time introductory quest, then tackle three wings and a final boss with at least one other player; Blizzard recommends a party of four. Your first completion each week awards a rewards cache, while Citadel Coins earned during the activity can be exchanged for exclusive cosmetics.
What is the Dark Citadel?
The Dark Citadel is a cooperative endgame challenge set in Nahantu. It comprises three distinct wings of encounters followed by a final boss. The wings can be completed over multiple visits, so a group does not have to finish the whole citadel in one session. Blizzard emphasizes coordination rather than relying on damage alone, and the activity includes a marker system for communicating intended moves.

Blizzard describes the design this way: “Brute force will only let you venture so far; the cooperation of your allies is the key to besting each Wing before finally facing off against the final boss.” — Blizzard Entertainment, 2024.
How do you unlock the Dark Citadel?
- Have access to Vessel of Hatred. Blizzard classifies the Dark Citadel as expansion content, not as an activity included with the base game alone. See Blizzard’s Vessel of Hatred launch information.
- Reach endgame and receive the introductory quest. The activity becomes available after the endgame introduction. Blizzard says the quest needs to be completed only once per account.
- Find or form a party. Join with at least one other player, or use Party Finder to list or find a group and select Dark Citadel wings as the activity.
Blizzard has not established a current minimum character level in the information cited here, so there is no level threshold to rely on in this guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Pre-order and receive:
- Light Bearer Mount in Diablo IV
- Only one code per customer
- Diablo IV is the next-gen action RPG experience with endless evil to slaughter, countless abilities to master, nightmarish Dungeons, and legendary loot.
- Embark on the campaign solo or with friends, meeting memorable characters through beautifully dark settings and a gripping story, or explore an expansive end game and shared world where players can meet in towns to trade, team up to battle World Bosses, or descend into PVP zones to test their skills against other players - no lobbies necessary - with cross-play and cross-progression on all available platforms.
How many players do you need?
The published minimum is two players; Blizzard recommends four for the best chance of success. Solo play is not supported as the intended way to complete the activity. If you lack a regular group, use Party Finder to look for players running the Citadel. Communication can help with coordination, but no particular headset or external voice-chat hardware is required: the in-game marker system is available.
Blizzard’s published recommendation is: “Mastering this challenge requires a minimum of two players, but it’s recommended to raise arms with a party of four for the best chance at emerging triumphant.” — Blizzard Entertainment, 2024.
How is the activity structured?
- Three wings: Each has its own challenges and battles. Cooperation is central to progressing through them.
- Final boss: The wings lead to a final boss encounter.
- Multiple visits are possible: You can complete the wings across separate visits rather than treating a single uninterrupted session as mandatory.
The available official overview does not provide a current step-by-step solution for each wing’s puzzles or boss mechanics. Expect to coordinate with your party and use markers to communicate rather than relying on a fixed walkthrough.

Citadel Coins and cosmetics
You earn Citadel Coins during the activity and can use them to unlock cosmetics exclusive to the Citadel. The official overview cited here does not specify a current coin-to-item cost or a full current cache contents table.
Historical Scroll of Restoration counts
Blizzard’s 2024 version 2.0 patch notes listed the following Scroll of Restoration quantities in the weekly cache by Torment difficulty. These are historical patch-note values, not a verified 2026 reward table:

For the historical figures, see Blizzard’s version 2.0 patch notes. Do not assume those counts are unchanged in the current game.
Is the Dark Citadel worth running?
It is a natural fit if you have Vessel of Hatred, can assemble at least a two-player party, and want a cooperative endgame activity with a weekly cache and Citadel-exclusive cosmetics. Plan for coordination across several wings and a final boss; because wings can span multiple visits, you can divide the activity across sessions. If you are playing solo or primarily want a current, exact reward breakdown, the published information cited here does not promise a solo route or establish a complete current reward table.
