On PC, The Simpsons Game is being run through a console emulator in the troubleshooting paths covered here: PCSX2 for the PS2 edition or RPCS3 for the PS3 edition. Start by identifying which emulator and game version you use; a setting or workaround for one is not automatically relevant to the other.
First, identify your emulator and the failure point
Before changing settings, note whether you are using PCSX2 or RPCS3, the console edition and game region or revision, the emulator build, your operating system, controller model and connection type, and the graphics backend. Record exactly when the problem occurs: at launch, after the intro, when starting a new game, after pressing Start, or only when a controller is connected. Also note whether it began after an emulator setting change, build update, or driver update.
The evidence for these symptoms is emulator-specific. The black-screen lead concerns PCSX2 and the PS2 edition. A controller reconnect prompt and a resolution-related crash were reported by one RPCS3 user running the PS3 edition. There is no established native Windows release or Steam installation to use as the assumed starting point.
PCSX2: black screen after the intro
Try the gamefix only for the matching symptom
A PCSX2 wiki search result names the “Delay VIF1 stalls” gamefix for a black screen after the intro when starting a new game. The wiki page itself was not accessible for current-build verification, so treat this as a troubleshooting lead—not a confirmed fix for every black screen or every game revision. If you try it, change only that setting, retry the same point, and revert it if nothing improves. PCSX2 wiki: The Simpsons Game

- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Determine whether the fault is game-specific
If the gamefix does not help, compare the behavior with a known-good game in the same emulator. A problem limited to this title points toward a game-specific compatibility or configuration issue; a similar failure elsewhere suggests looking at the emulator, graphics setup, or system environment.
For a reproducible fault, follow PCSX2’s issue-reporting guidance: enable file logging, reproduce the problem, and preserve emulog.txt. Do not restart PCSX2 after reproducing the issue before saving the log, because useful information may be lost. For a visible graphics fault, the guide also explains how to save a GS dump. PCSX2: controller not detected or buttons mapped incorrectly
Check the port and input source
- Open PCSX2’s controller settings and make sure the player-one device is assigned to Controller Port 1.
- Use SDL as the normal starting input source, then test the game.
- If buttons are unresponsive or mapped to the wrong controls, try SDL Raw Input and clear or manually remap the controls. Automatic mapping may not match a device whose reported button layout is incorrect.
- If an XInput-compatible controller does not work through SDL, try XInput as a backup.
- Use DInput only when the device does not work with SDL or XInput; PCSX2 describes it as a less reliable last resort.
These options and their limitations are covered in PCSX2’s gamepad and controller documentation. Remapping and input-source checks should come before replacing a controller. No particular controller model has been verified for this game.
Stop Steam Input and emulator hotkey conflicts
If a gamepad press triggers a keyboard shortcut, opens a pause menu, or affects the desktop, temporarily exit Steam completely or disable or change Steam controller support, then test again. PCSX2 documents conflicts between Steam Input keyboard mappings and emulator hotkeys. PCSX2 known issues

Investigate a crash that happens only with one controller attached
PCSX2 documents a crash associated with the third-party driver EZFRD64.dll, located under C:WindowsUSB_Vibration. Check for that specific driver if PCSX2 crashes only when the affected controller or adapter is connected. PCSX2’s documented remedy is to remove or uninstall the buggy driver; do not delete driver files speculatively, since doing so may stop the device from working. PCSX2 known issues

- Crash while opening settings or an error at launch: PCSX2 points to outdated GPU drivers as a possible cause. Update the drivers for every GPU in the system, including an integrated GPU in a laptop.
- Crash while adding a game directory or opening settings: Windows shell or user-interface modification software may interfere. PCSX2 names OldNewExplorer as one example.
- Crash in a Vulkan-related path when the compatibility pack is installed: PCSX2 says the OpenCL, OpenGL, and Vulkan Compatibility Pack can cause PCSX2 and other Vulkan applications to crash; its guidance is to uninstall the pack and reboot.
See PCSX2’s Windows troubleshooting guide for the documented causes. Avoid broad system changes that do not match the observed symptom.

One RPCS3 issue report, opened on December 28, 2022, describes The Simpsons Game accepting Start once and then asking the player to reconnect the controller. The reporter said disconnecting and reconnecting the controller cleared the prompt. The same report says the game crashed after continuing at a default resolution of 1080p but worked at 720p. If you encounter the same symptoms, use those actions as controlled diagnostic experiments: reconnect the controller when prompted, then—if the crash persists—try 720p and compare the result with 1080p. This is a single user’s configuration, not an RPCS3 compatibility guarantee or a universal fix. Do not apply PCSX2-specific gamefix or controller instructions to RPCS3.
Quick Recap
Which troubleshooting path applies?
| Question | PCSX2 / PS2 edition | RPCS3 / PS3 edition |
|---|---|---|
| Game-specific issue covered | A wiki search result names “Delay VIF1 stalls” for a post-intro black screen; current applicability could not be verified. | One 2022 report describes a reconnect prompt and a crash at 1080p that reportedly did not occur at 720p. |
| Controller guidance | Official PCSX2 documentation covers SDL, SDL Raw Input and manual mapping, XInput fallback, DInput as a last resort, Steam Input conflicts, and a specific driver-related crash. | The cited report says reconnecting the controller cleared that user’s prompt; it does not establish a general controller setup procedure. |
| Evidence strength | General controller and Windows troubleshooting is documented by PCSX2; the title-specific black-screen lead has limited verification. | The title-specific observations come from one user report and should be treated as diagnostic leads. |
