Story progression
For story, prioritize a dependable main damage dealer and invest in that character before spreading scarce early resources evenly across the roster. The 2024 Games Learning Society guide makes this resource-allocation point and treats story advice separately from score-oriented modes: Punishing: Gray Raven Team Building. A practical way to build with your roster
- Pick the activity. Decide whether you are building for story progression, Phantom Pain Cage, or War Zone. Avoid carrying over a score-focused lineup without considering what the new content asks of it.
- Choose the main damage dealer. Start with an owned character suited to the content and likely to do most of the team’s work on field. For early story progression, concentrate investment here instead of upgrading every character evenly.
- Check damage type and defenses. Consider whether physical shield reduction or elemental damage better fits the encounter. The community combat guide’s shield explanation is a useful baseline, not a guarantee for every enemy.
- Assign the remaining functions. Look for ways to weaken enemies, support damage, heal, or buff. Choose based on the characters available to you; do not force a Tank or Support into a slot if another owned character better serves the activity.
- Verify any named recommendation. Check its publication date, region or server, activity, and assumptions about character access and investment. A team listed for another patch—or for a competitive roster you do not own—is not automatically a useful target.

Compare suggestions on the factors that affect whether you can use them, rather than treating a list of character names as a universal ranking.
