Grand Theft Auto V launched worldwide on September 17, 2013, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Its tenth anniversary came in 2023—not 2026—and the clearest evidence of its staying power is concrete: GTA Online grew through years of updates, while Rockstar brought the game to a third console generation. That record shows unusual longevity and continued investment; it does not prove that GTA V alone reshaped Rockstar or the wider games industry.
What launched in September 2013
Take-Two announced GTA V’s worldwide release for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 17, 2013. The same announcement said access to GTA Online was included with every copy, while setting October 1, 2013, as the online component’s launch date. The campaign and the online service were connected in the package, but they had distinct launch dates. Take-Two’s release announcement records both.
How the game crossed into a third console generation
In 2022, Rockstar brought GTA V to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, describing the release as the game’s move into an “unprecedented third console generation.” Rockstar announced visual and technical options including graphics modes up to 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second, improved textures and draw distances, HDR options, ray tracing, faster loading, 3D audio, and platform-specific features. These are the company’s announced capabilities, not independent test results; “up to” does not mean every mode combines the maximum resolution and frame rate. GTA Online gave the release a longer life
The online component was not simply a one-time companion to the campaign. In its March 2022 announcement, Rockstar said GTA Online had received “8+ years’ worth of gameplay additions delivered across over 40 unique updates.” That is a company-reported count as of the 2022 announcement, not a current total. It does establish a sustained program of additions across the years after launch. Rockstar’s statement tied that continuing online experience to the newer consoles.

What the sales milestone does—and does not—say
In its November 2023 fiscal 2024 second-quarter release, Take-Two said GTA V had reached approximately 190 million units sold in to date, while marking the tenth anniversaries of GTA V and GTA Online. “Sold in” is Take-Two’s wording for the reported figure; it should not be silently treated as audited consumer sales. The number is a dated company-reported milestone, not a current tally. Take-Two’s earnings release provides the figure and context.
What “changed the game” can fairly mean
The documented story is more precise than the anniversary slogan. GTA V remained commercially significant a decade after launch, and Rockstar continued to support its online component and adapt the game for newer consoles. Those facts make longevity and continuing publisher investment a strong account of the title’s significance.

They do not, by themselves, establish that GTA V caused a particular change in Rockstar’s business, the games industry, or streaming culture. Axios’s anniversary retrospective discusses the game in relation to Rockstar’s evolution and audiences watching other people play, but that framing is interpretation rather than proof of causality. GTA V editions are not interchangeable across every console generation, and features depend on the platform and edition. Rockstar’s store presents Story Mode and GTA Online as distinct experiences and says installation and online play require internet access and a Rockstar account; platform-specific requirements may differ. Before buying or reinstalling, check the listing for the exact platform and generation you own, then confirm whether it includes the campaign, GTA Online, or both.
