If Steam DLC is missing or a game does not recognize it, first check the affected game’s Library > Properties > DLC page. That view separates whether Steam lists the content for your account from whether Steam says it is installed. If both look correct but the game still does not expose the content, the issue may require help from that game’s support team; the official Steam guidance does not identify a particular client update as a universal fix.
Check whether Steam lists the DLC and says it is installed
- Open your Steam Library and find the affected game.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties, then select DLC. You can also open the game’s Library page, choose its gear icon, and go to Properties.
- Look for the DLC in the management menu. Check both whether it is listed and whether Steam marks it as installed.
Steam Support says this menu shows which DLC you have for the game and whether it has been installed. The listing and installation status are separate checks: a DLC entry that is not installed points to a different next step than content Steam says is installed but the game does not show. Steam Support: Find Downloadable Content (DLC) for My Games.
If the DLC is listed but not installed
Check its installation state in the DLC management menu and let Steam finish any relevant game updates. DLC delivery depends on how the developer configured it. Steamworks says most DLC downloads and installs automatically when purchased, but developers can disable automatic downloading and let the game control installation. The DLC is associated with the base game but has its own app ID. Steamworks Documentation: Downloadable Content (DLC).
If Steam reports an update or installation error
Steam Support’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends trying these steps in order. They are general remedies for update and installation issues, not a guaranteed fix for every DLC problem.

- Restart Steam and your computer.
- Clear Steam’s download cache.
- Repair the library folder.
- Verify the affected game’s local files.
- If downloads are still problematic, try a different download region.
For file verification, use the game’s Properties > Installed Files page and choose Verify integrity of game files. Steam’s general troubleshooting page also includes reinstalling Steam to the same location or moving a game folder as later options; use those only if the earlier steps have not resolved the underlying update or installation problem. These steps do not establish that a specific DLC bug has been fixed. Steam Support: Update & Installation Issues and Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game Files.
If Steam does not recognize the game files
If the game is installed in another library location and Steam treats it as uninstalled, check Steam’s Storage settings and add the existing library folder. Steam Support recommends reinstalling the affected game if adding the library does not restore recognition. It also warns that an external drive can disconnect and cause recognition problems; that warning is not a recommendation to buy replacement storage. Steam Support: Installed games are appearing as uninstalled.

If Steam says the DLC is installed but the game cannot use it
Steam’s interface can confirm the DLC listing and installation state, but those checks do not prove that the game has exposed the content correctly. Steamworks says a game needs to check whether a user owns its DLC, and developers configure how that DLC is delivered. If Steam shows the DLC as owned and installed but it remains unavailable in the game, contact that game’s official support channel with the game name, DLC name, and what the Steam DLC page reports. The official materials cited here do not diagnose a specific title’s problem or establish a client update as its fix. Steamworks Documentation: Downloadable Content (DLC).
