Steam Deck Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown: What Each Status Means

Steam Deck’s compatibility labels are guidance, not guarantees. Here’s how to interpret Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown—and what to check on the game’s store page.

Steam Deck compatibility labels indicate how a game is expected to work on the handheld; they are useful guidance, not a permanent guarantee. Verified is the strongest positive signal, Playable signals that some friction may arise, Unsupported is an adverse assessment, and Unknown should be treated as no displayed assessment—not as proof either way. Check the game’s current Steam store page and its compatibility notes before relying on a badge.

What Steam Deck compatibility statuses tell you

The labels concern the experience on Steam Deck, not simply whether a game runs on a conventional Windows PC. SteamOS is Linux-based, and Valve says Proton enables many Windows games to run on SteamOS. That is why a game’s Deck compatibility can differ from its experience on a Windows computer. Valve’s Steam Deck page describes SteamOS and Proton.

The label is best read as an assessment of expected compatibility and usability. Look at the specific notes on the game’s store listing: the badge alone does not explain what will happen in every part of the game.

What each status means

Status How to read it What to check
Verified The strongest positive compatibility signal among these labels. It indicates Valve assessed the Deck experience favorably; it is not a guarantee that every player or future game version will have an identical experience. Read the store-page notes and consider whether the game’s controls and interface suit your needs.
Playable The game may be usable on Deck, but some interaction friction or adjustment may be involved. The caveat varies by title. Check the specific compatibility note rather than assuming all Playable games share the same issue.
Unsupported An adverse compatibility assessment. It does not, by itself, establish that the game cannot launch or that every feature fails. Read what limitation the store page identifies and decide whether it affects the parts you want to play.
Unknown There is no displayed official assessment to rely on. The label is not evidence that the game works, nor proof that it fails. Look for current store-page information and developer notes; if the answer matters before purchase, avoid treating the status as a compatibility assurance.

Verified versus Playable

Both are positive signals, but Verified represents the stronger result. In a March 4, 2022 explanation, Valve gave an example of a game showing controller glyphs most of the time but occasionally asking for a keyboard key. Valve said that could make it Playable rather than Verified. This is a dated example of how usability friction mattered, not a complete statement of today’s certification checklist. Unsupported does not necessarily mean nothing works

Valve’s same 2022 post described a title with most functionality accessible but an optional minigame that crashed, or a tutorial video that failed to render, as an example of a game that could be Unsupported. That illustrates why the store-page note matters: a problem can affect a rating without making every part of a game unusable. It is a historical example, not a universal description of current Unsupported cases.

Unknown is not a compatibility verdict

Valve’s available official explanations do not provide a current, detailed definition of Unknown. The safe practical reading is simply that no official compatibility assessment is shown. Do not infer that the game has been tested and failed—or tested and passed—from this label alone.

Why a status can change

Valve describes compatibility ratings as snapshots that can change over time. A game update, a Proton change, or a developer fix can alter the Deck experience. In its June 2, 2022 update, Valve said testing continued for new releases and older games, and credited improvements to both underlying technology work and developers’ changes to their games. That post is evidence that ratings can evolve, not a current estimate of how likely any particular game is to change. Valve’s June 2, 2022 update.

How to check a game before you rely on its badge

  1. Open the game’s current Steam store listing. Use the live listing rather than an old screenshot or an article describing an earlier status.
  2. Read the compatibility status and its notes. Identify the actual control, display, launch, or feature limitation reported for that title.
  3. Match the caveat to how you play. A keyboard prompt, for example, may be minor for one player and disruptive for another; an issue confined to optional content may matter less if you do not plan to use it.
  4. Recheck if circumstances change. Ratings are snapshots, so revisit the listing after a notable game or compatibility update if the status is important to your decision.
